Dates: 14 August – 9 October 2026
Location: University House, AUB Campus
Presented at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) as part of TheGallery exhibition and events programme for 2025–26, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of live performance within Bournemouth Film School at AUB.
Though small in scale, it reflects a much larger creative ecosystem – one built on collaboration, craft and the shared pursuit of bringing stories to life.
Behind every performance lies a network of invisible artistry. The dancer, actor, costume maker, makeup artist, technician and producer each leave their mark on what eventually appears effortless on stage or screen. This exhibition invites audiences to look beyond the final performance and discover the many creative layers that make it possible.
Representing disciplines across dance, acting, costume and makeup, the work on display celebrates the talent, dedication and ingenuity that drive the creative industries. These aren't just cultural practices, but valuable professions that contribute significantly to our economy, supporting employment, innovation and the production of experiences that connect people in meaningful ways.
As technology increasingly shapes how we create and consume content, the importance of human creativity remains undiminished. Some things can't be automated. We'll always need the physical muse – the moving body, the expressive face, the skilled hand and the collaborative spirit to transform ideas into lived experience.
This exhibition is a celebration of Bournemouth Film School's performance community and a reminder that behind every great performance stands a multitude of creative voices, whose artistry continues to enrich our culture, our communities and our future.
Dance remains the lens through which I see the world. Movement taught me how stories can be told without words, how communities are built through shared experience, and how creativity lives within the body as much as the mind.
About our exhibits
Falling Together by Emilie Bouet Conran – Summer 2025
Starring Emilie Bouet Conran and Ishan Mahabir-Stokes
This short film explores the human desire to dance amongst a collective. The viewer journeys with two dancers between a museum, ‘heaven’ and ‘the other place’ in a choreographic enquiry exploring introspection, collectivity and transcendence through dance as cathartic release.
Music: Falling Together by Jamie xx and Oona Doherty
Silence – The Sound of Me – Winter 2023
Inspired by the book Silence, in the Age of Noise by Erling Kagge, this collaborative dance performance explored what silence means to each of us and its power in modern life.
Do we crave it or does it scare us? And what does a dancer do, when they need both sound and silence?
A collaboration between BA (Hons) Dance, BA (Hons) Performance Design and Film Costume and BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance.
McQueen – The Maker and the Muse – Winter 2022
Inspired by the man behind the mask, McQueen – The Maker and the Muse was an original piece of contemporary dance theatre, taking inspiration from the people and places that shaped the designer, the demons that plagued him and the legacy he left behind.
Performed by second-year BA (Hons) Dance students, in collaboration with the BA (Hons) Performance Design and Film Costume course, this work was in performance at the Ocean Theatre, Pavilion Dance South West, Bournemouth.
The Fairytales We Should Tell Our Daughters – Spring 2021
When COVID-19 closed the theatres, AUB Dance responded to the newly shifted creative climate and made its first full-length film.
Drawing together an amazing creative team for choreography, film, editing, costume, makeup and music composition, The Fairytales We Should Tell Our Daughters was created. Our legacy to the fact it was still possible to make art, even when the world had shut down.
Based on the poetry of Nikita Gill, the cast and crew worked on location at Deans Court, Wimborne and in the Ocean Theatre at Pavilion Dance South West, to produce a unique digital performance response, at a time when the world had gone a little mad.
