This is AUB. A place to shape and build your work; to learn, share, provoke and collaborate.

Filming at Elliott Road

Elliott Road Studios

As part of Arts University Bournemouth (AUB)'s commitment to providing a standard of training that mirrors the creative industries, students – particularly those on Bournemouth Film School courses – have access to our complex of studios at Elliott Road, not far from campus.

The facilities are predominantly used by students on the BA (Hons) Film Production, and certain suites and stores by BA (Hons) Animation Production, BA (Hons) Costume and BA (Hons) Make-up, Hair and Prosthetics students. Furthermore, BA (Hons) Acting students may perform here in graduate films and other projects.

The studios

Elliott Road comprises three studio spaces, which are used throughout the academic year for everything from workshops and practical seminars to commercials and final-year graduate short films.

The studios have green screen capabilities, black-out cyclorama and DMX controlled grid lighting with desks and analogue dimmers, as well as industry-standard cinema cameras – including ARRI ALEXA mini LF, Sony FX9 and Sony FX6s – and Zeiss cine lenses. The spaces are also equipped with an extensive selection of lighting, grip and rigging, industry-standard sound recorders and professional microphones of all types from Sennheiser to Schoeps. You'll also get to take advantage of dollies, jibs, easy-rigs, dolly sliders and a full complement of stands, peripherals, and other materials.

Beyond the studios themselves, the site also features specialist make-up facilities, production office space, kitchenettes, and wired and wireless access to the University's IT infrastructure.

The Elliott Road studios can accommodate sets of various sizes, depending on the script, the budget and the time frame. At any time, there can be as many as five productions going on in addition to theatre construction work in our workshop (see below).

Other spaces

Used primarily by BA (Hons) Animation Production students, the Stop Motion Studios at Elliott Road are a dedicated space for the production and filming of stop motion animated projects. There are three main areas:

  • Making Space: A dedicated room for the fabrication of puppets, props, sets and any other creative construction needed as part of a stop motion film production. This area has dedicated desks, materials and hand tools for students, as well as facilities for the delivery of specialist workshops on stop motion making practice.
  • Stop Motion Shooting Studios: Two specialist studio spaces for filming, kitted out with professional lighting and camera equipment, using Dado, Kino Flo and Arri lighting kits, combined with Canon cameras and Manfrotto tripods. We also have considerable grip and rigging equipment, green screen sets, specialist animation stages and dedicated computer workstations running Dragonframe and all Adobe Suite software.

The Elliott Road Scenic Workshop is a fully kitted-out facility, which enables us to cater for all scenic and set construction requirements for film and theatre productions, building some fantastic sets and props for students on Bournemouth Film School courses. Equipment includes a Felder table saw; Axminster band saws, pillar drills, and scroll saws, alongside a wide selection of hand and power tools, including Festool products.

Our design students work with specialist tutors within their respective courses in putting together their designs, model boxes and drawings, which are then interpreted by the Scenic Services team at Elliott Road. They ultimately construct the sets using our workshop facilities.

The workshop is staffed by an experienced team of five who provide access and inductions whilst also building sets and working alongside students.

The Elliott Road Costume Store houses the majority of the University's inventory, including our pre-19th century period wear, 21st century clothing, panto costumes, fantasy pieces, and broken-down and distressed pieces. It primarily serves as a teaching resource for students on the BA (Hons) Costume and MA Historical Costume courses, who often hire the items for collaborative projects with other courses across AUB, such as BA (Hons) Film, BA (Hons) Acting and BA (Hons) Photography.

Many of our costumes are designed and made by our talented Costume students, mostly for AUB theatre productions, along with individual makes commissioned by the store to help fill any gaps in our collection. The space is also used for fittings, styling sessions and as an opportunity for students to volunteer with repairs, labelling, alterations, and general organisation. We aim to use in the Costume Store in a way that follows industry-level procedure, which gives the students valuable insight into professional working practices.

Meanwhile, the Prop Store is an ever-evolving Aladdin's cave, bursting with a range of objects, from the everyday to the whimsical, used continually on AUB film and theatre projects. Props are bought, sourced and made every year for the various productions.
