Support for students who are care-experienced, estranged, and young adult carers

Here at AUB, we offer support to students who are care-experienced, estranged, and young adult carers. For students in this position who are considering applying to AUB or want to find out more about us, we offer individual pre-application visits, providing the opportunity to see the campus and meet our staff and students.

The Access and Participation Team will be the key contact at AUB for those who are care-experienced, estranged or a young adult carer. With a dedicated lead contact depending on which bursary you're applying for and/or receiving.

Support for students who are care-experienced

The Care Leavers bursary supports students who've been in care prior to coming to AUB.

Support for students who are estranged

The Stand Alone Bursary supports students who are estranged from both of their biological or adoptive parents.

Support for young adult carers

The Young Carers Bursary is for people aged 18-25 who care for a friend or family member who can't cope without their support.

If you have any questions about the criteria or the application process, please email AUB’s Access and Participation Team who will be able to advise you as to how to apply for the bursary and how we assess the application. The Team will also be a point of contact for you throughout your time at AUB and will meet with you at least three times during the academic year ahead of each bursary payment.

We'll also invite you to our Transition to Creative Higher Education Day in the Spring. This is a dedicated day to help you and other students who are contextual offer holders get to know the University and meet AUB staff. The day includes workshops to prepare you for life at AUB, for example, budgeting and finance, the opportunity to ask questions in the AUB Student Q+A, and time with a representative from your course team, where you can get to know your course and tutors better.

Throughout your time at AUB the Access and Participation Team will be able to refer you to the many sources of advice and support available while you’re studying and to encourage you to achieve your study goals. You'll be also given the opportunity to apply to work as an Outreach Ambassador, carrying out paid work with young people from schools and colleges who are thinking about studying at university.

Bursary FAQs

To be eligible for the Care Leaver, Stand Alone or Young Adult Carer bursary you must be 25 or under, domiciled to England and registered with Student Finance England. This isn't a means-tested bursary and is in addition to any other bursaries and benefits that you may be entitled to.

Eligibility and application evidence related to each of the three bursaries can be found in the above bursaries section. Please click on the bursary you are considering applying for further details.

On the application form you will be asked to provide the contact details of a professional that can confirm your eligibility for your bursary. This could be:

  • A local authority representative
  • A teacher from your school or college
  • Your GP
  • Another professional person who's unrelated to you

You will need to wait until you have completed the enrolment process in September at AUB to apply for the bursary.

If you have identified yourself on your UCAS application form as a student that may be care experienced, estranged or a young adult carer you will receive an email from the Access and Participation Team (wp@aub.ac.uk) to your AUB email address with instructions on how to apply once applications have opened for your academic year of study.

The application form can be found on e-vision on your My AUB Dashboard.

Please use your AUB email address on your application form. This will also be the email address we use to contact you to confirm the status of your bursary application and for communications about your bursary meetings.

The bursary is worth £2,000 a year and is paid in three instalments after a Bursary meeting with your named contact and confirmation that you are engaging and attending your studies.

The first instalment paid in the Autumn Term is 25% (£500), the second instalment paid in the Spring Term is 50% (£1,000) and third instalment paid in the Summer Term is 25% (£500).

The bursary is paid directly into your bank account that is linked to your Student Finance England account.

As well as our bursaries we have a range of financial support available for undergraduate students in receipt of a full maintenance loan from Student Finance England, with a net household income of £25,000 or less. Our support offer is based on household income information provided by Student Finance England and eligibility is verified annually. What you’re entitled to receive will depend on your precise, individual circumstances.

For further details of the undergraduate student financial support available please visit our undergraduate fees and financial support webpage.

Yes of course. If you found out about the bursary and your eligibility later in the year, or if your situation has changed, we are still here to support you.

If you are applying part way through the academic year, or you are in your second or third year of undergraduate studies, you will find the application form on e-vision on your My AUB Dashboard.
