Level
Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.

- Notebook and pens/pencils to make notes
- Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy
For your first class:
- Hardback A4 sketchbook
- Drawing pencils
- Charcoal
For future classes (your tutor will advise in advance):
- Black fine line drawing pens
- Cheap acrylic paint set
- Paintbrushes
- Cheap canvases (in a variety of sizes)
- Any additional materials that you wish to experiment with (optional)

About this course
This fun and lively course celebrates the notion of ‘art for all’ in an environment where you'll be encouraged to experiment with your artistic expression, where there is no right or wrong.
On this exciting course, experimentation, exploration, and fun are at the forefront of everything you’ll do. You’ll be encouraged to explore different methods of creativity and enjoy the process of creating art rather than focus upon the finished piece.
Each week you'll explore different art movements and artists, with the aim of inspiring your activities in areas such as action art, experimental ink work, marbling ink, acrylic paint pouring, water colour, expressive art inspired by poetry and ‘rubbish art’ (using recycled materials to create artwork on canvases).
Inspiration will come from the likes of cave art, Japanese ink work, Kandinsky, Pollock, Matisse, and Rauschenberg, just to name a few. Colour will also play a big part of this course; how colour can affect us and influence our creative expression
All classes will be relaxed, and you’ll be encouraged to express yourself and develop your own creativity.
- How to use different materials and experiment with them
- ‘Action art’, including techniques such as marbling and pouring
- Working with alternative, recycled materials to create ‘rubbish art’
- Using paint, both acrylic and watercolour
- Ink work
- Mark making
- Working with unusual mediums (in 2D and 3D)
- Colour theory
- Exploration of artists and techniques used by art movements
At the end of the course you'll:
- Possess improved artistic skills and confidence to express yourself freely through art
- Be able to demonstrate a wide range of techniques using a variety of mediums and be able to choose materials appropriate for your intentions
- Be inspired by different art movements
- Be knowledgeable in a range of different artistic processes
- Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
- Have boosted creativity and imagination
- Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course

Will I be assessed?
No, there is no formal assessment. As the course progresses your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback, so you know how you're getting on.
