About this course
Whether you're a beginner looking to build foundational skills or an experienced artist aiming to refine your practice, experiment with new approaches, or explore different artistic media, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to a range of techniques, materials, and creative processes.
Under the guidance of expert tutor Tereza Tzelepaki, an established fine art practitioner specialising in painting, drawing and woodblock printing, and experienced AUB educator, you'll embark on a creative journey that combines theory, practical exercises, demonstrations, and hands-on projects. Through engaging sessions, you'll develop an understanding of essential fine art principles and techniques, enabling you to strengthen your skills and express your own artistic vision.
Throughout the course, you'll explore a range of topics including drawing and painting fundamentals, composition, colour theory, brushwork, texture creation, woodcut techniques and more. You'll also have the opportunity to experiment with diverse materials such as charcoal, ink, acrylic, pastels and oil paint, helping you discover and develop your own creative style.
Taught in a supportive and collaborative studio environment, the course offers personalised feedback and guidance from your tutor to support your artistic development. Group critiques and discussions will also form an important part of the learning experience, allowing you to share ideas, gain valuable insights from fellow participants, and broaden your artistic perspective.
By the end of the course, you'll have developed a strong foundation in fine art techniques and created a portfolio of artworks that demonstrate your progress and creative exploration.
No prior experience is required. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience who wish to further develop their artistic practice. Whether you're considering a future in fine art or simply want to explore your creativity, this course will provide the time, space and guidance to support your artistic growth.

Timetable
- Week 1: Tones-tonal chart, understanding light and shadow, charcoal, pencils, acrylics (black and white), ink, still life (different background colours either black or white)
- Week 2: Charcoal, pencils, acrylics, ink, still life – composition
- Week 3: Acrylics, still life, colour theory
- Week 4: Acrylics, dry pastels (flat colours/hue)
- Week 5: Pencil drawing, woodcut, composition
- Week 6: Woodcut and printing
- Week 7: Life drawing
- Week 8: Oil painting
- Week 9: Oil painting
- Week 10: Quick portraits, exhibition
At the end of the course you'll:
- Developed your understanding of 2D media and approaches
- Enhance your creative processes through an understanding of practical experimentation and research
- Your progress and development will be reviewed throughout the course, with ongoing feedback and guidance from your tutor, including insights informed by professional artistic practice
- Each session will include opportunities to share and discuss work with the group, encouraging a supportive environment where participants can inspire and learn from one another
- At the end of the course, a final showcase of work will be organised to celebrate the creative outcomes achieved during the programme

Will I be assessed?
No, there's no formal assessment. You’ll group share your work at the end of each session with the intention to support, inspire and encourage each other’s learning.
As the course progresses your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback, so you know how you're getting on.

Level
As an open-access course, no prior experience is required. The course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience who wish to develop their skills further.
Experience or qualifications required
None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.
Whether you aspire to pursue a career in fine art or simply want to explore your creativity, this course will provide the knowledge, practical skills, and guidance to support and elevate your artistic expression.
It's also an ideal progression course for existing short course students who wish to diversify their studies and further explore the field of fine art.
