It begins with an application

If you feel like one of our creative courses is the right fit for you, you can start making your application. We're here to help you through everything from getting started on UCAS to understanding your entry requirements.

If you have burning questions that you'd rather ask us in person, we run a range of events throughout the year, including Open Days and Campus Tours. You'll also find us at UCAS events across the UK.

How to apply

If you've found the right course for you, it's time to take those next steps towards joining our creative community. Begin by making your application, understanding the fees, and any other requirements.

Once you've found the perfect Undergraduate course, you can apply to study via UCAS, including direct entry applications to second and third year.

When applying through UCAS, use the institution code A66 for courses taught at Arts University Bournemouth. For courses based at Bournemouth and Poole College, use code B49. We'll then use your completed UCAS form to make decisions about your application. You can find out more on entry requirements in our apply section.

When you apply to one of our courses, it's important that you help us get a good picture of both you and your work – so you'll need a great personal statement. We want to know more about why you're interested in the course, your key influences, and what you hope to do after your studies.

The fee that you pay Arts University Bournemouth provides the necessary equipment and training for you to complete your course.

You may also choose to buy some items of personal equipment such as a laptop or tablet computer, but this isn't required. Desktop and laptop computers are available for you to use in common study areas, including a loan system in the Library.

If you decide to undertake an optional placement year, the tuition fee is £1,850. This is subject to inflationary increases based on government policy, and providing you progress through the course in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).

None of our courses currently require an interview.

However, our performance-based courses, BA (Hons) Acting, BA (Hons) Acting for Screen, and BA (Hons) Dance, Movement and Creative Practice, require an audition as part of the application process.

If you're invited to one you'll have at least 10 days notice. We have some audition guidelines on our portfolio page.

Portfolio guidelines

For the majority of our courses, we'll ask you to digitally submit a portfolio as part of the application process.

Portfolios should show examples of your work – both finished and work in progress – that demonstrate your interests and skills. We expect to see around 10 slides/images in your portfolio that shows your identity as an artist.

If we ask for a digital portfolio then we'll give you 30 days to submit it. Sometimes we'll need a portfolio submitted quickly if there's a UCAS set deadline approaching, but if you need more time, just let us know and we'll try to help.

We've created specific portfolio guidelines for each of our courses, you can take a look at these below.

Portfolio FAQs

Most of our courses will ask for a portfolio. However, there are some exceptions. The following courses don't require a portfolio as part of the application process:

  • BA (Hons) Business of Games
  • BA (Hons) Communication Design and Strategy
  • BA (Hons) Content Creation with Marketing
  • BA (Hons) Costume
  • BA (Hons) Creative Direction
  • BA (Hons) Creative Writing
  • BA (Hons) Creative Writing (Online)
  • BA (Hons) Future Media Production
  • BA (Hons) Fashion Communication
  • BSc (Hons) Fashion Management and Strategy
  • BA (Hons) Games Narrative
  • BA (Hons) Media, Marketing and Advertising
  • BA (Hons) Sustainable Luxury: Fashion and Interiors

For undergraduate courses, we don't expect you to submit a digital portfolio at the same time as your UCAS application.

If we require a link to your online portfolio, we'll contact you by email and through the AUB applicant portal to request the URL. So you only need to provide us with your portfolio when we request it.

To understand what our course teams expect to see please see our portfolio guidelines.

We normally ask that your portfolio is provided within 30 days of us requesting it.

If you're unable to provide us with your portfolio within 30 days, please just let us know so we can make a note on your application and extend your deadline.

It's worth knowing that the sooner we receive your portfolio the sooner the course team can make a decision on your application.

For undergraduate courses, we need to make a decision on your application before a deadline set by UCAS and this will determine the latest date that we will be able to accept a portfolio – we may have to reduce the deadlines from April onwards.

We’ll ask you to submit a single link to your online portfolio. This can be a link to a public portfolio on a website like wix.com, Instagram, Behance or similar or it can be a private link to a copy of your portfolio hosted on an online file sharing site like Google Drive.

For showreels and auditions we also ask for a single link to a video or playlist hosted on YouTube or Vimeo or similar (either public or unlisted).

There are a number of platforms well suited to submitting your portfolio. We recommend you take into consideration what type of file you are generally using and how you wish it to be viewed.

  • For static images (for drawings, photography, scans, etc.) we advise applicants to use Flickr where possible, however we're happy to accept portfolios through any online sharing platform of your choice; whichever host site you find easiest to use.
  • You may wish to consider using Vimeo or YouTube (for moving images and show reels), Google Drive or a blogging site like Word Press, or Tumblr (for static images or a mix of files types).
  • Some students choose to create a personal website (wix.com is popular) containing their work and perhaps explanations of the work submitted.

The most important thing you can do is ensure you adhere as closely to the AUB portfolio guidelines as you can.

Regardless of which platform you choose, please just ensure your portfolio is available to view publicly and isn't password protected or require a login to access it.

You can produce your portfolio using YouTube, Vimeo, Behance, Wix, Flickr, Drop Box, Google Drive or another suitable platform for your work.

We need you to collate everything in one place and have available a single link that you can share with us. It's also very important that there is no password or login required to access the link.

You need to submit your portfolio link via the AUB applicant portal. This will ensure your portfolio is properly recorded on your application. You can do this following the instructions below:

  1. Log in to the AUB applicant portal (click the “Problems logging in?” link if you can't log in).
  2. You'll see you have two messages; one message giving you details about the portfolio you're requested to submit, and another message where you can submit the portfolio link.
  3. Select the “Applicant Portfolio Request” message on the right-hand side – this is where you'll be prompted to provide your portfolio URL.
  4. Paste the URL in the box provided and select "no" on the drop-down menu and click “Save”.

Once this is done the link will be automatically added to your application, and we'll receive a notification to send your full application to the course team for further review.

Once you submit your link the admissions team will test the link to make sure it’s working and available without logging in.

If that’s fine then we’ll pass your application and portfolio on to the course team to review. If there are any problems then we’ll get in touch by email and through the applicant portal to explain the issue and reopen the option to submit a new link on the applicant portal.

Entry requirements

We welcome applications from all different educational profiles and experiences as talented creatives can develop in many environments.

AUB considers the whole of the application when making admissions decision. While we'll make an offer based on the qualifications declared on your application, we also factor in your personal statement, your reference and – where appropriate – your portfolio or audition. Therefore, applicants who may not achieve the academic results listed below are still encouraged to apply.

UK and British Qualifications

This information is equally useful for students educated in the UK and those studying at British-patterned international schools abroad.

Please note that AUB doesn't request information about criminal records from our applicants.

IB Qualifications

International Baccalaureate Diploma – The IB Diploma courses are tariffed on the UCAS Tariff calculator so applicants are encouraged to explore what their results (predicted or actual) could achieve on the UCAS Tariff. We will normally ask applicants to achieve a UCAS Tariff of 104–120 for admission to any AUB undergraduate degrees.

International Baccalaureate Careers Program (IBCP) – AUB is happy to consider applicants completing the IBCP. Because the IBCP will vary from school to school, we ask applicants to declare all components of their IBCP studies so that we can properly assess. Where all components of the IBCP are tariffed (such as IB Diploma courses, BTEC Diploma, etc), AUB will make an offer of a UCAS Tariff points total. Where some of the IBCP components are not tariffed (such as SCAD course work), the offer will reflect results from the different components.

IB Diploma courses - We will consider applications from students who haven’t enrolled in the full IB Diploma but have completed IB Diploma courses as part of an accredited high school diploma programme or in conjunction with other recognised qualifications.

Any questions about admission from an IB programme? Email admissions@aub.ac.uk and we are happy to help!

English requirements

To apply to AUB, international students will need to have an English language qualification at the required level for the course you would like to study.

You can find guidance about which qualifications we accept below – this depends on the course you are applying for and whether you need a visa to study in the UK.

Unfortunately, we can't accept a letter from your school confirming your English Language proficiency.

If you need to take an external test, we recommend that you take this as soon as you can, ideally between March and May.

We also offer Pre-Sessional English courses for those who do not quite meet the scores for the BA and MA courses.

Qualifications and tests that are accepted for admission will normally need to have been completed within three years of the application submission. Some exceptions to the three-year expiration may apply including the following:

  • British Nationals with accepted English language qualifications.
  • Nationals of a majority English-speaking country with a suitable English qualification (such as English as a part of a high school qualification or a Bachelor’s degree where the language of instruction is English). Find out if you're exempt on the UK government website.

All English qualifications used to obtain a CAS for a Student Route Visa may only be used within a limited window:

  • External tests (such as IELTS or TOEFL) must be taken in the three years before the start date of the course.
  • School-based English results (including IB or national school curricula) must be taken in the five years prior to the application date
  • GCSE English may be completed more than five years prior to the application providing that the applicant completed their Level 3 qualification within a year of applying.

If you struggle to book a suitable test or are unsure which test is best for you, please contact us for advice.

Please note: we do accept IELTS One Skill Retake scores that meet our minimum stated entry requirements.

Though English is your first language, you may need to provide us with an English language qualification. If you apply for the Foundation Diploma and are under 18 then we require that you have one of the following qualifications:

This demonstrates that you have the English language skills necessary to succeed at university.

  • GCSE English Grade C/Grade 4
  • GCE O-Level English Grade C
  • SQA Standard Grade Credit English
  • SQA Higher Grade English Grade D
  • Intermediate 2 Certificate English Grade A-C
  • National 5 Certificate English Grade A-C
  • Irish Leaving Certificate Ordinary Level English Grade C2/O4
  • Irish Leaving Certificate Higher Level English Grade D3/H6
  • IGCSE First or Second Language English Grade C

If you don't hold one of the qualifications above, we'll request that you gain one of these as part of any Conditional offer that we make to you.

By gaining this qualification, you'll also learn transferrable skills which will strengthen your CV and skill set for the future.

If you’re a national of one of the countries listed below, we can accept English studied as part of your English Language high school qualifications. We would expect to see English studies in every year of your high school qualifications, including the last (graduating) year with a grade of C or above. Find more information about exemptions.

We’ll also need you to provide a course specification and an academic transcript from your current University.

Once we receive your application, we'll contact you for more information about your current course and we may request a digital portfolio or invite you to an audition for our BA (Hons) Acting course.

Conditional offer – this means that you must fulfil certain criteria before you can be accepted onto a course. Usually, this will be passing your current examinations at a certain grade. The details of the offer are printed in your offer letter and can be viewed on MyApplication and via UCAS Hub

Unconditional offer – this means that you've already satisfied the entry criteria and have secured a place.

UCAS defines mature students as applicants over 21. If you are a mature student and you meet the entry requirements above, please apply through UCAS.

If you don’t meet the entry requirements, we may still consider your application. We can assess your formal qualifications and also take into account relevant work experience.

We're very interested in applicants who have relevant experience in the creative industries, so make sure you give details of this in your application.

We might advise you to take a Foundation Diploma course at AUB, or to consider an Access to HE course. Unfortunately, we don't offer Access courses at AUB, but you can find out more here.

If you're unsuccessful, you’ll be able to view feedback on the UCAS website. We’ll also send you a message on the AUB applicant portal, giving you further information.

If you'd like to request additional feedback, you can email admissions@aub.ac.uk – Please note that only you can request this feedback.

AUB will only consider overseas applicants through The Common Application who haven't already applied through UCAS. Applicants submitting applications via The Common Application must be liable to pay overseas fees.

Contextual data: We may flag some contextual data in your application. This helps us to understand more about you as an applicant. You can read more about contextual data.

Transparency data: Information on the number of applications, offers, registrations and attainment of different groups of AUB applicants and students is available on the OFS Transparency page.

Yes. Further information about our contextual offers can be found in Section 6 of our Admissions Policy and on our Contextual Offers page. If you have any questions about our contextual offers, please email the Admissions team.

BA (Hons) Acting and BA (Hons) Dance, Movement and Creative Practice are the only courses where you'll be asked to attend an audition; if you're invited to one, you'll have at least 10 working days notice to prepare.

If you're unable to attend an audition in person (for example due to living outside the UK) then we'll request a link to a recorded audition.

Many of our other courses will require you to submit a link to your online portfolio or showreel.

Some of our courses are designed to accept students with suitable qualifications and for these courses we'll be able to make a decision based on your application without the need to submit a portfolio. If you apply for one of these courses without the qualification subjects we're looking for, don't worry! If we can't make a decision based on the information in your application then we may request a link to your online portfolio.

Applicant FAQs

When we get your application we will send you two emails. These emails will normally be sent during working hours, so please wait for at least one working day for them to come through.

The first email will acknowledge you application and the second will contain your initial login details for the AUB applicant portal. Many email providers will try to block these emails because they contain login details.

We recommend that applicants don't use a school or college email address on their application. We find that school spam filters often block your login details emails completely. It's also important to use your own personal email so that you don't lose access to our emails to you during the Summer!

On your personal email account it's a good idea to add admissions@aub.ac.uk to your contacts or safe senders list as well as checking your junk or spam folders regularly.

If it's been longer than one working day since you applied and you haven't got our emails and they're not in your junk/spam folders then please just let us know – if you include your full name, date of birth and the course you've applied to in the email then we'll be able to find your application and help you log in to the portal.

When you log in for the first time, you'll be asked to change you password to something more memorable. If you're using an Apple device then it's best not to allow the device to "remember" your password. Unfortunately Apple devices tend to save the temporary password instead of the new one, so you can end up locked out of the portal.

Please ensure you're trying to log in to the correct portal. Make sure you've closed down any browsers/tabs on other devices that might be trying to access the portal. The login and password reset process will often fail if you try to log in on more than one tab. This is the most common cause of errors.

You can then try to reset your password by following these steps:

  1. Click the “Problems logging in?” link at the bottom of the login screen.
  2. Follow the “Applicant link” and then select “Forgot your password?”
  3. Enter the required details.
  4. You'll then receive an email containing your password. This email will arrive within an hour but can be flagged as Junk or Spam by your email provider.
  5. After you've logged in, you'll be asked to change your password to something more memorable.

If you're logging in using an iPhone or iPad, you'll need to follow a slightly different process:

  1. Find "evision.aub.ac.uk" and delete the saved old password.
  2. Log in from scratch using the correct password that you've set yourself. That should then force your device to save the new correct password.
  3. Apple devices unfortunately save the temporary password and don't update it even if you click to "update" when logging in.

If you still experience problems, just let us know. If possible, try to send us screenshots showing the problem so that we can help.

If you try to reset your password and get the error message – "Account details incorrect - forgotten password could not be reset" – this might mean that we have an error in your data on our application system.

Please email admissions@aub.ac.uk with the AUB ID, Last Name and Date of Birth entered onto the form and we'll check them against the details on our system and correct any errors.

We'll also manually reset your password so that you're able to log in again.

If you get an 'invalid ISS message', your browser has cached the old password. Sometimes entering the correct login details a second time will resolve this, but if that doesn't work, then the browser cache needs to be cleared:

Yes, that’s absolutely fine and something a lot of our applicants actually choose to do. You'll need to apply for the Foundation Diploma directly to us (not through UCAS), which means you don't have to use up an extra UCAS choice.

If you accept an offer from us for both the Foundation Diploma and BA (Hons) course, we’ll contact you in August to ask you which place you plan to take up.

If you’d like to apply for the Foundation Diploma and we’ve already got a UCAS application from you, simply email us at admissions@aub.ac.uk with your AUB ID or UCAS ID and let us know.

We can create a new Foundation Diploma application for you using the information on your UCAS form, so there’s no need to fill out our direct application form yourself!

If you’ve applied through UCAS, you can only reply to your offers when all of your five choices have made a decision on your application. Please see the UCAS website for help with this.

If you’ve applied to us directly (for example for our Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media or our Master's degrees) then you can reply to your offer by logging into the AUB applicant portal. There should be a message in your in-tray that you can click on to accept or decline or to request to defer your place. If you can’t see this message then please email us admissions@aub.ac.uk with your AUB ID, course name and what you'd like to do and we can reply to your offer on your behalf.

Once you accept an offer from us, new tiles will be available in the AUB applicant portal:

  • You’ll be able to register to book accommodation with us within 48 hours of accepting a place. You can contact our accommodation team for more information around how to book accommodation.
  • You’ll also have a new tile that'll allow you to declare a disability to us, to make sure that our Disability team can start putting in place any support you need during your studies. If you have any questions, you can contact our Disability team directly.

Join the AUB Applicants Facebook group. When you request to join, you'll be asked to provide your AUB ID or your UCAS ID and the course that you've applied for. This is so we can verify that every member of the group is a genuine AUB applicant, so you can be confident that you're meeting your future course mates.

We'll try to approve you to join as soon as possible – usually within a few hours.

Yes. AUB welcomes applications from students who are from under-represented backgrounds in Higher Education. Further information can be found on our Contextual Offers page and in section 6 of our Admissions Policy.

There are lots of opportunities to visit AUB:

  • Visit us at an Open Day – you’ll have the chance to explore the campus, hear from our students and lecturers and ask all your burning questions.
  • Visit our campus in person on other days for a self-guided tour. Parking is limited, so it's always best to let us know you're coming so we can reserve a visitor space for you. After parking, please start your visit at our main reception, which is located in University House. At reception, you can collect a map of our site. If you have trouble locating reception, please ask a member of our security team to direct you. Unfortunately, the course team won't be available to meet you (they'll be busy teaching the courses), but please enjoy exploring all our facilities and getting a feel of the atmosphere.
  • Book on to one of our Campus Tours, which run on Fridays throughout the year. These tours allow you to explore our creative campus and its general facilities with one of our student ambassadors, so that you can get a feel for AUB.
  • If you're unable to make it to campus, you can access our recorded virtual Open Day talks on our Open Day Hub. You can also take a virtual tour of our campus.

To book a room, please note the following information:

  • You must have firmly accepted an offer to study before you are able to book a room in halls of residence.
  • Not all halls of residence are available to students at all levels of study.
  • Students living in halls are not segregated by age or gender.
  • You'll be able to select your preferred Halls of Residence and room type, subject to availability. Allocation is at the sole discretion of AUB; there's no right of appeal against allocation of rooms in halls.
  • Rent is paid termly in advance. Rent per week is detailed on our Halls of residence page.
  • Rent is inclusive of all bills, excluding a TV licence. Halls of residence booking forms are legally binding contracts, for full-time tenancies.
  • We comply with the UK/Guild HE and ANUK codes of practice for student accommodation. The UUK/Guild HE and ANUK codes were developed specifically for educational establishments.
  • Members of the Codes are independently audited to ensure that halls of residence meet specified standards.

For more information, please contact one of our Student Advisors on studentservices@aub.ac.uk or by calling 01202 363780.

Applicants who are under 18 at the start of their course will be considered in the normal way. However, the university does require an under-18 consent form to be completed and returned before we're able to confirm a student's place on the course. This'll be sent to you by email at the point of any offer being made.

For more information, please view our AUB Under-18 Policy Statement, or contact the Admissions team on admissions@aub.ac.uk or by calling 01202 363225.

When enquiring about a course or applying for a place at AUB, we'll process personal, and sometimes special category, data about you. This data will be submitted by you, if you submit a request for further information about what we do, or if you submit a direct application to study with us. If you apply for a place on a course at AUB via UCAS, we'll get your data from them.

Our Privacy Notice for enquirers and applicants explains how we'll use your data before you become a student at AUB.
