Amber Thornton
The quality of Amber’s tailored garments lies in her attention to detail and love of classic 1920s style.
In her final project, Amber specialised in men’s tailoring, creating a navy officer’s uniform consisting of a double-breasted reefer jacket and a pair of trousers, and a 1930s single-breasted overcoat for AUB Productions' This Happy Breed at the Palace Court Theatre in May 2025.
Her jacket and coat feature single and double welted pockets with pockets flaps, hand-finished with stab-stitching – a laborious technique which also finishes the fronts of the jacket and coat. As a tailor, she feels that it's intricate hand sewn finishes that gives a period garment that authenticity, which makes all the difference on stage. It was during second that she learnt these skills, when tailoring a 19th Century morning coat and fell in love with the craft of tailoring.
Amber grew up dancing and performing and has always had a love of theatre, which is why she couldn't resist working backstage as a dresser on two AUB Productions shows alongside her third-year projects.
Plans after degree
In her career, Amber sees herself working as a bespoke men’s tailor for operas, historical films and events/weddings and is excited to see how her practice develops further as she refines her skills and knowledge.
