As costume supervisor for Hurn Court Opera’s production of La Cenerentola, I purchased and sourced all fabrics and materials for the making of four Regency-style dresses with a contemporary twist. To ensure the brief was met, I undertook specific research into the details of regency garments as well as modern fabrics that could be thoroughly embellished and seen from afar. The dresses made by four of our costumiers for La Cenerentola included garments for Cinderella and her two stepsisters, Clorinda and Thisbe. As well as evening gowns, the makers constructed two corsets, chemises and petticoats. As supervisor, all of these components were sourced by me, from backing fabric to golden Indian trims, to silver sequin decoration and everything in between.
Being a costume supervisor for a production was a new role for me, and I have learnt so many valuable skills that I will be taking forward into industry. This includes handling and keeping track of a budget, time management skills, and organisational skills. As a supervisor, it’s your responsibility to have the correct materials ready for the makers and not to overspend the budget. This final project has taught me the importance of this as well as communicating with your team.
Plans after degree
I plan to go into full time work, hopefully working backstage in the West End.
