Helena Tuff

Helena is a costume maker inspired by historical sewing practices to produce sustainable theatrical costumes for the stage.

For her Final Major Project, Helena worked on the AUB Productions' This Happy Breed, in which she made a bias-cut dress based on an archival Madeleine Vionnet dress and a tailored dust coat with a cloche hat. These pieces demonstrate her skill as a multi-faceted costume maker, challenging herself to use the skills she's learnt at AUB to make a 1930s cloche hat and an Elizabethan neck ruff.

At school, Helena enjoyed learning history, and applies this to the research she carries out within her projects. She has been particularly interested in the social impact of historical events and how fashion would often reflect changing ideas and politics.

Helena is passionate about theatre and how it can be used to impact culture, which has driven her to make a difference through the art of costume. She uses fashion to express her own political ideas, influenced by the work of Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.
