Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.

  • Notebook and pens/pencils to make notes

  • A1 or A2 smooth cartridge paper (150-300gsm)

About this course

This course is ideal if you're planning a career as a print technician, studio helper, workshop assistant, or as an artist and designer looking to broaden your creative horizons. Likewise, it's perfect for complete beginners that wish to try screenprinting for the first time.

With expert guidance from your tutor, Donna Peters, this hands-on course will introduce you to all the equipment and a wide range of screenprinting techniques using water-based processes.

You'll use photographic stencil emulsions to make screens from photographic, digital or hand-drawn sources. You'll also use methods of working directly on the screen mesh, allowing experimental print work to be carried out for use with paper and fabrics.

At the end of the course, you'll have produced and accumulated many high-standard individual and creative pieces for portfolio submission or to frame and display for years to come.

  • How to produce colourful interesting images from your own designs
  • A variety of different stencil making techniques, including paper stencils and photographic stencils
  • To register multiple colour layers to create your design
  • The proper set up the screen, using the squeegee and the studio’s specialist screenprinting equipment
  • Colour mixing, use of transparency and the overlaying of transparent or opaque layers

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Possess improved artistic and printing skills
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of colour theory
  • Be able to prepare your own stencils and use specialist equipment
  • Understand computer-based photo stencils and colour separation
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination
  • Feel encouraged to learn new ways of working with industry standard software
  • Be able to tackle a brief and create interesting solutions 
  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course
  • Leave with a sketchbook of experimental and finished works in a variety of mediums

Will I be assessed?

No, there is no formal assessment. You’ll group share your work at the end of each session with the intention to support, inspire and encourage each other’s learning. 

As the course progresses your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback so you know how you're getting on.
