On this 10-week course you'll explore bespoke textile design, pattern and printmaking, and learn the essential skills needed to create your own stunning printed fabric.

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

Experience or qualifications required

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.

  • Set of rulers
  • Aprons
  • Sketchbook
  • Notebook

  • Sharpener

Materials for the rest of the course:

  • Linoleum (lino) blocks
  • Fabric
  • Fabric scraps for practising and to print on
  • Aprons
  • 2-3 clean jam jars with lids (300g-450g in size)
  • A thick towel
  • Stencil card
  • 1-2 A3 acetate sheet(s)

About this course

This introductory course is an exploration of bespoke textile design, pattern and printmaking, using a range of surfaces. You'll learn about the principles of composition, the meaning of scale, the use of colour and shapes and how to develop different types of repeat patterns.

This hands-on course explores both old and new printing trends alongside principles of composition, the meaning of scale and proportion, the use of colour and shapes, and your own pattern repeats.

You'll take inspiration from the world around you and be encouraged to use your own drawings in your work, bringing your ideas to life through hand-printed techniques like block and silk screen printing.

This course focuses on sustainability, and you’ll have the chance to produce sustainably crafted retail products while also practising your print skills at home on ready-made fabric products of your choice.

The freedom to create what you want is open – whatever finished product or idea you choose to explore, you'll develop your knowledge and practical skills in creating aspirational homeware, decorated objects, furnishings and illustrated goods.

  • Creating and carving stamps for block printing
  • Block printing on fabric and fabric classification
  • Colour theory and palette development
  • Pattern repeats
  • Printing with found objects
  • Design and creation of stencils for screen-printing
  • Basic screen-printing techniques

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Have the skills and knowledge to continue your own pattern development and hand-printing practice outside the course, with the potential to sell what you create.
  • Possess your own creative style using various printing techniques and knowing where to find inspiration.
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired.
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination.
  • Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course.

Will I be assessed?

No, there's no formal assessment. As the course progresses, your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback so you know how you're getting on.
