Suitable for adults aged 18+.
Level
Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.
Experience or qualifications required
None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.

Any additional costs
You'll need to provide some printmaking materials and equipment. This'll incur an additional cost if you need to purchase one for the course. See the 'What to bring to class' section below for full details.
Any additional materials and resources will be provided by AUB and is included in your course fee.
- A selection of quality printing paper (300gsm) or a pad of watercolour paper (300gsm)
- Cartridge paper (300gsm) or Printmaking Somerset paper (250gsm)
- Small piece of lino
- Basic lino cut tools
- Apron
- Latex gloves
- Drypoint needle
- Basic drawing materials
- Sketchbook
- Scalpel
- Notebook and pens/pencils to take notes
You're also welcome to bring your own oil-based printing inks should you wish. Your tutor will advise on where you can purchase solar plates after the first session.

About this course
Immerse yourself in the world of printmaking. On this exciting, hands-on course you'll learn a variety of techniques and printing methods and will develop imagery through the traditional process of ‘Intaglio Printing’ as well as experimenting with ‘Relief Printing’.
On this practical course, you’ll be learning essential techniques includes monoprinting or monotype, lino, drypoint, colour with intaglio, chine-collé and solar plate to create your own unique prints.
Each week, you'll draw on inspirations, from photographs and sketches to masterpieces and work from great artists throughout the decades.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or already possess printmaking skills, this course will build on your creative design skills and explore the world of image making through printmaking. You’ll have access to an extensive range of printing presses in the studio.

At the end of the course you'll:
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of a variety of print processes and techniques, such as Relief and Intaglio printing, and the differences between them
- Be able to work safely, effectively, and efficiently with professional equipment and tools, applying your new skills to a range of materials
- Be able to demonstrate the significance of mark-making in printing and have the confidence to make your ideas as physical print – you may even feel confident enough to become a successful independent printmaker
- Possess a good knowledge of colour theory and how an imagery develops with various colours
- Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
- Have boosted creativity and imagination
- Possess the foundations to continue creating beyond this course

Will I be assessed?
No, there's no formal assessment. As the course progresses, your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback so you know how you're getting on.
