Overview

This one-day experiential workshop introduces participants to experimental approaches to working with ink, combining material exploration with a process-led, intuitive mode of creative enquiry. Working with ink as a fluid and responsive medium, participants will be encouraged to playfully explore the dynamic interplay between control and surrender, form and formlessness.

Course information

Through a series of guided exercises and opportunities for both open experimentation and conscious application, the workshop will develop both an understanding of ink’s unique properties and its potential for expressive mark-making. Emphasising curiosity, risk-taking, and critical reflection, the day offers a supportive space in which images can emerge rather than be imposed and where making becomes a way of listening to material, to self, and to the subtle movements of imagination. The workshop is suitable for individuals from a range of creative backgrounds, including those with little or no prior experience.

Working with fine artist Pauline Stanley, you'll also have the opportunity to work with Pauline’s handmade oak gall ink from oak galls sourced at Hengistbury Head.

  • A structured but playful introduction to working with inks
  • A series of thoughtful exercises exploring the potential of inks
  • Then further exercises to explore the application of these techniques
  • Drawing selected natural objects from Pauline’s inspiring collection
  • Guidance from an experienced and passionate practising artist with a background in drawing and printmaking and community engagement in the arts
  • A calm, supportive studio environment where you'll learn by doing

At the end of the course, you'll:

  • Have experience of working with ink as a fine art medium and confidence in the continuing application of the processes explored in the course.

Upon completion of the workshop, you'll receive an official AUB Academy Certificate of Attendance.
