With an interest in menswear and a fascination with the different techniques and materials used in fine tailoring, I entered my third year with an intent to focus on making. Working for AUB and external productions allows me to explore the construction and making of menswear from multiple historical periods.

In the first term of third year, I had the privilege to work on Hurn Court Opera’s production of La Traviata, making for the character of Doctor Grenville. As they had reframed the production to be set in the 1930s, this meant that I was tasked with making a three-piece, 1930s pinstripe suit, a challenging but rewarding costume that resulted in one of my favourite makes from my time at AUB.

In second term, I worked on AUB theatre productions Moonfleet and Grimm Tales. Moonfleet was a show set in the 1700s and for this production, I made for the character of Elzevir. This included making a three-piece costume consisting a pair of breeches, waistcoat and overcoat. This costume set was incredibly rewarding as I was able to work closely with the designer to truly bring her vision to life. I also had the opportunity to be a dresser on the production, allowing me much more insight into the running of a show and opening my eyes to a future in theatre.

Finally, I worked on Grimm Tales, a fantasy show where I made three costumes, one for The Bird, The Cockerel and The Fox, allowing me to fully stretch my making skills and to explore other styles and materials which I had never worked with before, while collaborating with a series of designers to help them realise their vision.

After university, I have plans of moving to London and finding a job either as a maker or a dresser on theatre productions in the West End, having found a passion for this while completing my degree at AUB.
