An AUB Summer Shows exhibition by TheGallery in partnership with AUB Alumni Office and AUB’s Technicians.

Dates: 4 June – 27 September 2024

Location: Ground Floor, South House, AUB Campus

From Alumni to Technical Services, Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is a community and platform for creativity.

Overview

The Art of Collaboration: Summer Shows 2024 documents our collaborative community by celebrating the diverse creative specialisms that are thriving here at AUB. From June through to September, we host our annual Summer Shows, which transform the campus into the most extensive gallery space in the south of England.

Every year, AUB opens its doors to thousands of visitors to marvel at the creative work of its extraordinary students from all over the world studying disciplines across art, design, media and performance.

The 2024 shows include outstanding projects from students graduating from the Foundation course, BA (Hons) programmes and the Graduate School. The stellar work on display, both in the Summer Shows and in this exhibit, gives the public a unique glimpse inside the dream factory that is AUB.

This artwork includes a selection of installation shots from AUB’s 2024 Summer Shows and highlights the movement and performance-based practices of our students. You can see students performing in our very own Palace Court Theatre wearing costumes designed and made by BA (Hons) Costume students and an action shot from the catwalk of 2023’s Graduate Fashion Week showcasing the work of a BA (Hons) Fashion student. Our students also bring vibrancy to AUB’s local community, as seen in the Carnival brought to Bournemouth by BA (Hons) Events Management students in this year’s Alice in Spring festival.

The artwork features an image by Nicholas Teo, a final year student from BA (Hons) Commercial Photography. His piece, Tapestry, was featured in TheGallery’s recent exhibition AUB International Collective in partnership with AUB’s Students’ Union and AUB International. It is another piece of work that further highlights the beauty of diversity and how individuality is embraced here at AUB.

This exhibit was curated by three AUB staff members. Joseph Warin, a Technician in AUB’s Print Room and TheGallery’s freelance graphic designer; William Hernandez, TheGallery’s Technician; and Millie Lake, Assistant Curator and Operations Officer at TheGallery. Both Joseph and Millie are alumni of AUB: Joseph studied BA (Hons) Visual Communication and Millie is a graduate from AUB’s BA (Hons) Fine Art.

Joseph and William form part of AUB’s technical team. AUB’s technicians are artists and designers who expertly navigate the worlds of painting, sculpture, digital art, photography, ceramics, and more. They're skilled specialists in both traditional crafts and expert pioneers of the ever-changing technologies of today. Their work highlights their innovative approaches to art and their ability to push the boundaries of their chosen mediums which is key in fostering AUB’s environment of learning, collaboration and inspiration.

This was demonstrated in our YOKE exhibition of 2023, which was part of TheGallery’s 25-Year Exhibition Programme. The exhibition was curated by Rhiannon Evans, Emily Grigg, Harriet Mummery, Tom Preston and Andrew Stacey and showcased work from AUB’s technical practitioners.

"Summer Show-time at AUB is one of the most energising and exciting experiences of our year. Join us throughout the summer months to be energised by the creative work of our fabulous students from all over the world, including those studying on our Foundation course, our BA (Hons) programmes and the Graduate School."We open our doors and welcome students and their families, alumni and industry, and thousands of visitors to share the magic and be part of the dream factory that is AUB."

– Professor Paul Gough, AUB Principal and Vice-Chancellor

TheGallery is a national and international public platform for the arts within the UK. Throughout the year, we work with teams and courses across the University to provide students and staff with opportunities to showcase their work, promoting the University’s shared passion for excellence in education, industry, and the art sector.

AUB staff are key in fostering this environment of learning, collaboration and inspiration. This poster exhibition highlights how TheGallery collaborates across teams to mentor University staff on exhibition design and curation to enhance their own practice. Another example of this is YOKE, a showcase of work from AUB’s technical practitioners which was exhibited in TheGallery in 2023.

AUB Alumni

We're proud of our alumni and rightfully so. Many of them have gone on to do incredible things!

AUB’s alumni community, AUB&, is a continuation of our campus — a home and a network for all of our wonderful graduates, a place to find out what everyone’s been up to and generally stay a part of our creative community.

It’s open to all students who graduated from the University, whether under AUB or any of its previous titles (Arts University College Bournemouth, Arts Institute at Bournemouth, and Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design).
