Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) has taken an important step in exploring a potential collaboration with University College Fairview (UCF) in Malaysia, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The MOU, signed on 27 January 2026, marks the beginning of a mutual exploration and thoughtful discussions around future creative and arts education engagement between the two universities.
“At AUB, we believe in building international relationships that start with deep understanding and respect," comments Lisa Mann, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the University, "ensuring that any future collaboration is academically robust, contextually relevant, and rooted in genuine alignment between institutions.
“Our approach to international engagement is guided by a commitment to quality, relevance and integrity – not simply growth or scale. Any partnership must enrich our academic community and respect the distinctive identity and strengths of the host region.”
AUB and UCF both appreciate that while the creative industries operate globally, educational collaborations need to be locally grounded and adaptable to be successful. This approach reflects a wider shift in international higher education toward partnerships that prioritise depth, alignment, and long-term value.
Dr Vincent Chian, Provost of University College Fairview, says, “We see this MOU as the beginning of a long-term dialogue. Malaysia occupies a unique position as a bridge between East and West. Interest from regional and international families and organisations continues to grow, especially in credible pathways for creative and arts education.
“Our goal is not to recreate AUB in Malaysia. Instead, we want to explore how AUB’s artistic excellence and pedagogical strengths might intersect with what Malaysia does well. Over time, this could take many forms or evolve into something we cannot yet define.”
Over the coming months, academic leaders from both institutions will work together to assess how best to move forward, with careful consideration of regulatory frameworks, academic standards, and shared visions for creative education.
Lisa adds, “This exploratory agreement is about building trust, understanding local context, and identifying shared values. Rather than exporting a ‘one-size-fits-all’ model, we are focused on listening, learning, and exploring how our creative expertise might intersect meaningfully with Malaysia’s educational landscape.
“We’re excited by the possibilities ahead and look forward to deepening our understanding of how AUB’s educational strengths might complement emerging opportunities in the region.”
