Comparison and switching service Uswitch has named Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) as a silver-tier institution in its rankings for commitments to sustainability and renewable energy among UK universities.

New analysis from Uswitch’s business energy experts looked at HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) data on each institution’s energy use, emissions, renewable generation, staff and student FTE (Full Time Equivalent) for 2022–24 to calculate per-FTE and year-on-year changes.

The universities were then benchmarked and scored across these sustainability metrics, with the top-performing institutions earning a gold, silver or bronze ranking.

Ben Gallizzi, business energy expert at Uswitch, says, “It’s positive to see a clear and encouraging trend across UK universities towards reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

“Silver-tier universities are making encouraging progress towards becoming more sustainable. The research highlights that renewable energy adoption and sustainability initiatives are key for institutions to become energy-efficient campuses and help the UK’s sustainability targets.”
