This brand-new course is ideal for anyone interested in learning the art of wirework jewellery design and making. Whether you’re a complete novice or someone looking to enhance your existing skills, you don’t need to possess any prior experience – all we ask is that you bring your enthusiasm and creativity, and we’ll accelerate your design and tactile skills to the next level.

This 10-week part time course has been developed in collaboration with Petrina Hooper, an established industry wirework specialist with 13 years’ experience in jewellery design and creation who'll introduce you to the essential skills, techniques, and knowledge that underpin all jewellery makers. We'll nurture develop your foundational knowledge in furthering your future development and success as a jewellery maker.

This course offers engaging hands-on sessions that foster creativity and skills development, where you'll receive continuous personalised feedback in supportive and collaborative environment where you can share ideas and inspiration with fellow students.

A final showcase of your completed projects will take place at the end of the course, providing a platform to celebrate your achievements and craftsmanship.

  • An overview of the purpose of wirework jewellery
  • Understanding wires and tools
  • Introduction to essential techniques; bending, twisting and cutting
  • Safe working practices
  • Exploring clasps, beads, and findings
  • Incorporating various media types
  • Upcycling old or secondhand jewellery or other items
  • Polishing and finishing
  • Design principles, concept processes and inspiration
  • Planning and sketching (recording the process)
  • Research and development of ideas
  • Talk about your ideas and get constructive feedback

At the end of the course you'll:

  • Have a solid understanding of wirework techniques and best practices.
  • Be able to create multiple pieces of jewellery that you can wear or gift.
  • Develop confidence in your artistic abilities and the design process.
  • Connect with a community of fellow jewellery enthusiasts.
  • All students with 100% course attendance will be issued with an official AUB Short Course Certificate of Attendance detailing course content, and study hours

Will I be assessed?

You'll be continually assessed in a variety of ways including practical tasks, observations, assignments, presentations, and portfolio work.

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

Experience or qualifications required

As an introductory course, there are no formal entry requirements.

Students may wish to conduct some self-study and additional project work between course sessions to fully benefit and support learning development throughout the course.

  • A3 sketchbook and a set of drawing pencils

  • Further beading and findings supplies (your tutor will advise you in the first session)
