Course information

This 10-week course provides a supportive introduction for complete beginners, as well as an opportunity for those with experience in traditional jewellery making, to explore alternative techniques that complement existing skills within silverclay.

Metal clay is made from tiny particles of silver combined with an organic binder and water, creating a soft, clay-like material that can be shaped by hand. When fired using a gas torch or kiln, the binder burns away, leaving behind solid, pure silver. The finished pieces are purer than sterling silver and can be hallmarked.

As you learn the core techniques of working with metal clay, you’ll complete a series of small jewellery projects that allow you to put your skills into practice. Typical projects may include pendants, earrings, rings and cufflinks, all designed and made by you. You’ll also be introduced to basic soldering techniques to support simple construction and finishing.

One of the key advantages of metal clay is its accessibility beyond the classroom. The process requires minimal tools and specialist equipment, making it ideal for those who wish to continue creating at home without a significant investment.

Each session focuses on a specific technique, supported by examples and tutor-led demonstrations, followed by a practical mini-brief to develop both your design thinking and hands-on skills in a relaxed and encouraging studio environment.
