Course information

Through hands-on projects and engaging topics, you'll gain confidence and practical skills to develop your own unique aesthetic.

Over 10 weeks, you'll explore the captivating world of interior design, uncovering how to craft schemes that truly wow. You'll systematically learn about the history of design, space planning, and how to survey and measure interiors accurately. With a focus on creativity and practicality, the course covers a wide range of skills, such as drawing scale plans and elevations, understanding the psychology of colour, and working with patterns, textures, fabrics, and finishes. Along the way, you'll build your presentation skills to showcase your ideas with confidence.

This course is your ideal starting point to develop a rich portfolio of your ideas and work, learn essential tools of the trade, and gain inspiration from industry techniques. Whether you’re looking to refresh your creativity or prepare for further interior design studies, you’ll leave with valuable skills, ideas, and a newfound confidence to design stylish, inviting spaces.

Whether you're looking to study this subject for your own interest or wish to apply to further interior design courses, the course will provide you with an ideal opportunity to build your portfolio and learn the basic tools of the interior design trade.

  • The use of colour in interior design, colour theory and psychology
  • Site surveying, drawing accurate scale plans and elevations
  • Learning to draw in 3D
  • Historical and cultural influences in design and architecture
  • Understanding interior design styles
  • Working on a project to a brief
  • Concept design, presentation boards, sample boards
  • Spatial planning, sourcing materials, furniture and finishes
  • Turning 2D design ideas to 3D
  • Presentation skills

At the end of the course:

  • You'll have a good understanding of the role of an interior designer and the interior design process from start to finish, and be able to independently run an interior design project.
  • You'll have completed an interior design project from concept to 3D, which can be used as part of a portfolio for further study or employment.

You can request a certificate to confirm your achievements, providing you've a 100% attendance record. To request a certificate please get in touch with us at academy@aub.ac.uk and confirm your name and the title of course you've completed.

Will I be assessed?

No, there's no formal assessment. As the course progresses your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback, so you know how you're getting on.

Thursday 14 January – 18 March 2027 (10 Thursday evenings, 18.00–21.00)

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

Beginners or anyone with some experience who want to refresh or develop their skills further.

Experience or qualifications required

None – this is an introductory course. We have no formal academic entry requirements for our short courses.

You may need to purchase materials for this course – please refer to the ‘What to bring to class’ section for more information.

Any additional materials and resources not listed below will be provided by AUB.

  • A2 sketchpad or approximately 12 sheets of A2 cartridge paper
  • Selection of pens and pencils (including a mechanical pencil) and a rubber
  • Notebook
  • Scissors/craft knife/scalpel
  • Pritt stick or paper glue
  • Coloured pencils
  • A selection of design magazines from which to cut images
  • Ruler
  • Set squares – 1x 45 degree and 1x 30 degree or an adjustable one
  • A scale ruler for drawing plans (choose one with scales of 1:20, 1:50 and 1:100)
  • Paint colour charts and colour mixer cards
  • Any fabric, flooring or materials samples
  • A selection of design magazines from which to cut images

If you're unsure of anything, your tutor will explain the list of materials in the first class.
