Course information

The course is delivered on campus and is suitable for aspiring interior designers, current students, or those who've completed one of our introductory interior design short courses.

If you’ve ever wanted to turn your interior ideas into professional-looking drawings and 3D visuals but felt unsure where to start, this course is designed for you. Through step-by-step demonstrations, guided practice and hands-on workshops, you’ll learn how to create accurate interior plans and engaging 3D representations using AutoCAD and SketchUp.

You’ll be introduced to the essential tools and workflows used by interior designers to communicate ideas clearly and professionally. In AutoCAD, you’ll focus on producing accurate 2D drawings such as floor plans and elevations. In SketchUp, you’ll learn how to bring those drawings to life by creating 3D models, adding finishes, furniture and spatial detail.

Your tutor will guide you through SketchUp’s core tools and techniques, including drawing and measuring tools, push/pull modelling, navigation controls and applying materials. You’ll learn how to build interior spaces in 3D, add furniture and accessories, and develop a clear sense of scale, proportion and layout.

By the end of the course, you’ll feel confident using both programs together, transforming 2D AutoCAD drawings into fully realised 3D SketchUp models, giving you a strong digital foundation to support further study, professional development or personal design projects.

  • Understanding the software interfaces and toolbars
  • Navigating and working confidently on screen
  • Using core tools such as line, rectangle, circle, arc, offset, copy, fillet and trim

  • Model interior design schemes in 3D using SketchUp
  • Combine AutoCAD and SketchUp workflows by turning 2D drawings into 3D models
