As a BA (Hons) Costume student, I have developed many costume construction skills to create beautiful, long-lasting garments fit for stage and film in both menswear and womenswear. By the end of my degree, I have been able to work in the industry as a supervisor, designer and maker.

After my first year, I was grateful to be hired as designer and supervisor of the New Arab American Theatre Work’s production of the original play Rosette by William Nour. Then, my second year work really showed the kind of work I could create, such as my Virginia Woolf-inspired 1920s ensemble, which included corsetry, millinery and dressmaking. To finish off that year, we were given the creative freedom to design and make an urban decay-inspired bodice, which was a commentary on freedom of thought and the human spirit.

After my second year, I was hired as a maker for the Oxford Playhouse for their winter pantomime Dick Whittington. It was my biggest foray into menswear and theatrical tailoring.

In my third year Production Practice unit, I made The Old Major costume for the AUB production of Animal Farm, which continued to strengthen my menswear skills. Finally, my Final Major Project included the costume of the Dragon Princess for Grimm Tales, which was a stunning womenswear design I was happy to bring to life.

After graduation, I plan to move to London and pursue industry work as a costume trainee or dresser with the hope of being taken on as a maker in as many workrooms as I can make my way into! I look forward to exploring the industry, the possibilities and learning more about myself as a maker and all I could become.
