BA (Hons) Dance

Steph Spicer

I am an ambitious street and contemporary dancer who is passionate about the way that dance makes individuals feel, rather than the sole focus being what the movements look like to the outside eye.

I started my dance journey when I was eight years old when I joined a dance community group called ‘MissFits’. Throughout my time there, I learned that the art of moving my body is a powerful way of expression. I went on to complete my dance GCSE and A-Level courses with Distinction*.

For the last three years, I have been teaching secondary school dance students to embrace the feeling of movements rather than how they look in the mirror. In addition to this, I have worked with international students this past summer, exploring how people from different cultures and backgrounds respond to music and dance instructions.

Throughout my time at AUB, I have learnt to listen to my body with how to express myself through movement. This understanding was further developed when taking part in the ‘Mature Movers’ class at PDSW. By joining in with the participants, I learnt that dance can be for enjoyment and a form of exercise, meaning that they have no pressure on what movement should look like.

For my final project, I created classes for GCSE Dance students who attend The Bourne Academy. The focus of my project was to support the dancers with their journey in understanding how dance makes them feel rather than judging what the movements look on their body.

Plans after degree

Post graduation, I will continue to work with international students throughout the summer to further expand my knowledge on how different cultures respond to music and movement commands.

After the summer, I will be travelling for a month across America. During my travels I intend to participate in some dance workshops so that I have the opportunity to learn from a range of choreographers. I also want to continue expanding the message that I created for my final project and offer it to other schools within the Dorset area.
