Centred around modernising the practice and process of tapestry-making, this piece subverts the historical hierarchy separating craft and fine art techniques. The textile hanging merges embroidery, crochet, weaving, macrame, print and dyeing with painting to produce a deconstructed tapestry depicting a seated figure.
The bright colours and intricate patterns provide a contrast to the young woman’s closed-off posture, representing an outwardly reserved but inwardly thoughtful and vibrant personality. The painting gradually fades into craft elements that become sparser and looser until they fall away into strands, hinting at childhood slipping away as the young woman leaves the security of home
