BA (Hons) Dance

Jessica Swatton-Reed

As a passionate contemporary dancer, I’ve always been inspired to share my knowledge and experience with people. It’s always been more than just a passion for me; I’ve developed my personality through dancing, connecting with my soul through movement.

Growing up with ADHD and a language disorder, I often found it difficult to express myself verbally. I would feel frustrated when I couldn’t communicate what I wanted to say. But everything changed when I discovered dance. At the time, my ADHD felt overwhelming, but dance became a powerful outlet. It gave me a way to channel my energy, calm my mind, and finally express myself.

Since I discovered it, I’ve never stopped dancing. In school, I even started a dance club for anyone who just wanted to move and feel free. I love how raw, emotional and freeing improvisation is. There’s something magical about putting on music and letting your body speak. No pressure, no stress, just a connection between you and the rhythm.

When it came time to choose a university, I knew I wanted to study dance. Being mostly self-taught, transitioning to a structured course was challenging at first. But I could never have imagined developing my skills to this level. Being in the presence of other skilled dancers has sparked my motivation to improve my movement and strive to reach even higher levels. Most importantly, I have been able to develop my own specific movement style whilst studying with peers and celebrating what made me unique!

For my end-of-year project, I created a documentary about the importance of dance for individuals with additional needs. I wanted to show how transformative dance can be for people like me, and for so many others. My goal is to highlight its power as a tool for expression, healing, and connection.

Plans after degree

After my degree, I plan to take a gap year to travel and work in the Alps for six months. I’ve been in education my whole life, and after I finish my degree, I want to expand my passion for dance through travel and education about the art of dance.

It is my goal to pursue a career as a dance practitioner. I want to educate the community through dance by inspiring and helping others to discover the same joy and release that dance has given me. This degree has taught me so much. I’ve explored and increased my level of technique, while gaining passion and self-confidence within myself. It’s shown me how dance can be a voice, a path, and a purpose. And I can’t wait to share that with the world.
