Sean Aita, a former associate professor at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2026 New Year’s Honour list for services to English Language and UK Culture in Europe.

A classically trained actor, award-winning theatre director and playwright, Sean’s 40-year association with Vienna’s English Theatre in Austria has seen him write, adapt and direct educational dramas for students studying English as a second language.

His plays are published and distributed to schools across Europe with his work performed by professional actors and seen by over 100,000 young people each year.

"To be recognised by my country for cultural work I’ve done outside of it feels really special," says Sean.

“I’m very passionate about theatre, and the positive impact it can have in education. Whether that’s helping European students study English, connecting communities with theatre via the Forest Forge, or inspiring the next generation of actors and playwrights at AUB, it’s about me making work that is going to affect young people, their thinking or their feelings about the world.”

Previously an associate professor in theatre at AUB and Director of External Affairs, Sean frequently returns to the University as a guest director, most recently in 2025 to direct AUB Productions' This Happy Breed.

“I’m always impressed by the quality of AUB’s students whenever I visit," he says. "I’ve employed a number of alumni from the BA (Hons) Acting course over the years and I’m currently working with AUB graduate Elliot Cox, who’s performing the role of Washington Otis in Spooked! – my adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Canterville Ghost – which is touring Austria until June.”
