Professor Paul Wenham-Clarke, an acclaimed photographer and academic from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), has been announced as a headline speaker for Mid Sweden University’s prestigious Designdagen (Design Day) 2026.

The annual event, which takes place on 28 May across Mid Sweden University’s Sundsvall campus and local cultural landmarks, is set to focus heavily on sustainability, inclusivity, and the powerful role of visual communication in modern society.

This year’s showcase places a distinct spotlight on imagery and photography, making Paul's involvement a major highlight. Known for his compelling, socially conscious documentary photography, his insights are expected to set the tone for an event dedicated to how creative industries can drive meaningful societal change.

“Design influences how people can participate in society and shape their lives,” says Per-Olof Hedvall, Professor of Design at Mid Sweden University. “During Design Day, we want to show how design can contribute to a more inclusive, accessible and sustainable society. It is extra exciting this year that the day focuses on imagery and photography.”

Paul will lead an international line-up of speakers, bridging the gap between global academic research and industry practice. He'll share the stage with other prominent experts, including accessibility specialist Susanna Laurin from the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), and renowned designer and photojournalist Donald Boström.

“Photography has a unique ability to cut through the noise and make complex global challenges like climate change and social inequality deeply personal,” says Paul.

“I’m thrilled to join Mid Sweden University for Design Day 2026 to discuss how we, as visual communicators, can move beyond just creating beautiful aesthetics. Our responsibility now is to use the lens to challenge perspectives, champion inclusivity, and inspire the sustainable actions our world urgently needs.”

The full-day event will also celebrate the next generation of creative talent, featuring presentations of thesis exhibition projects from graduating students in graphic design, industrial design, and photography.
