To celebrate the release of his spellbinding new novel, The Knowing, author and academic from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), Dr Kevan Manwaring is co-organising an enchanting Midsummer Faery Ball.
All profits from the magical evening of otherworldly revels, taking place on Saturday 20 June, will go directly to support the vital conservation work of the Dorset Wildlife Trust, bridging the gap between the wild, natural world and the ancient folklore that inspires the novel.
The Knowing, which was published on 30 April by Goldendark, is the culmination of Kevan’s extensive doctoral research. The 584-page contemporary fantasy weaves a rich tapestry of 17th century Scottish fairy lore and the haunting diaspora of Appalachian music, telling the story of Janey McEttrick, a troubled modern musician forced to journey to Scotland to lay to rest the ghost of her ancestor, the Fairy Minister Reverend Robert Kirk.
Kevan, who's the programme leader for MA Creative Writing (Online) at AUB, explains, “Because the novel explores the thin, wild boundaries between our world and the supernatural ‘Otherworld’, a Faery Ball is the ultimate thematic launch event. Guests are warmly invited to dust off their wings, don their finest faery garb, and step into a night of magic, music, and community.”
Attendees can expect live music, a magical atmosphere, drinks, nibbles from the "Faery Queen's table" and a celebration of folklore and the natural world. Costumes are highly encouraged, with prizes for the best-dressed fae.
Kevan adds, “I wanted the launch of The Knowing to be more than just a book signing; I wanted it to be an experience that brings people together in celebration of folklore and nature.
“Supporting the Dorset Wildlife Trust feels incredibly fitting. In traditional folklore, the 'Good Neighbours' or fairies, represent the wild, untamed spirit of the land. By supporting the Trust, we are helping to protect Dorset's very real wild places.”
