Arts University Bournemouth (AUB)'s Innovation Studio has announced a new partnership with the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).
The NOC is funded by UK Research and Innovation to work on National Capability programmes, and manages on its behalf, the National Marine Equipment Pool – Europe’s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state-of-the-art research ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook.
Rob Fanner, Innovation and Business Development Manager of AUB Innovation Studio, says, "We are excited to announce a new partnership between the NOC Innovation Hub and AUB Innovation Studio.
“This collaboration brings together NOC's world-leading expertise in ocean science and marine technology with AUB's cutting-edge creative and design-led innovation.
"Through this collaboration, we have the potential to uncover new possibilities in sustainable marine technology, foster creative solutions to global ocean challenges, and empower a new generation of innovators to build a thriving blue economy."
The new partnership between the two innovation hubs saw the AUB Innovation Studio team visit the NOC in June with a view to making them a new, full-scale replica of one of their underwater Gliders for the NOC to use for display purposes at events and shows.
Gliders are a type of robotic underwater vehicle used for measuring oceanographic parameters such as chlorophyll levels, temperature and salinity, which are then transmitted back to the shore. They're very effective tools for gathering data from the ocean and carry a great variety of instruments.
