Five alumni from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) are among the artists shortlisted for this year’s Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize.

Juliette Losq and Justine Moss (Postgraduate Research degree), Keira Rathbone (Foundation Diploma in Art and Design), and Richard Gregory and Ilona Skladzien (both MA Fine Art) have all been selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize exhibition.

It’s the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing, reflecting a broad scope of contemporary drawing practice. This year, the prize received nearly 2,300 entries from artists across the world.

“Being selected for this year's Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize gives some validation to what I do as an individual artist,” says Ilona. “It’s also a meaningful recognition for the AUB Drawing research group, led by Professor of Drawing Siân Bowen, as four of its members have works featured in this year's show.”

Ilona’s selected work, Nighty, is one of a series of works made with paper napkins, developed around the themes of domestic life and the artist’s experience of parenting a baby.

“Sleepless nights, parental instincts, and tiredness became the backdrop of my creative process and inspiration for this work,” Ilona explains.

“Although my practice is continuously evolving, drawing remains at the core of it. In recent years, I've been experimenting with domestic materials and exploring new working processes, aiming to draw the viewer's attention to the intricacies of every day.”

Meanwhile, Keira Rathbone, who grew up locally, entered a 14-page typiction – an observation from the bottom of Evening Hill, Poole. A piece that Keira says, “really pushed the concept of drawing and visual communication.”

“I love typicting subjects from life and the interaction this generates,” she says. “The questions, comments and memories triggered by people of all ages. And I love to be in the present moment, and feel at one with the environment I am in.

“It’s almost a meditation in observation. An exercise in truthfulness and a way of communicating with strangers. It’s the life sessions and the unexpected encounters that keep me inspired and motivated to keep exploring and developing my typewriter art practice.”

AUB played host to the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize at TheGallery earlier in 2024, as part of the prize’s 2023 touring exhibition.

The 2024 exhibition took place at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London, from 3–16 October 2024.
