Finding My Focus: An unexpected journey on MA Photography (Online) at AUB (so far!)

My path to a Master's degree in Photography at Arts University Bournemouth has been anything but linear. Initially, my ambitions lay firmly within the realm of veterinary science, driven by a deep connection to the natural world and a desire to care for animals. When that path didn't materialise, I found myself drawn to photography, a long-standing passion that offered a different way of engaging with and documenting the world around me.

AUB's MA Photography (Online) course presented itself as an accessible and flexible route, allowing me to pursue this passion while navigating other commitments. While the practicalities of the online format and affordability were initial draws, the intellectual depth and research-oriented nature of the course have proven to be far more rewarding than I initially anticipated.

The curriculum has broadened my understanding of photography beyond mere image capture. Modules exploring self-promotion and collaborative practices have provided valuable insights into the professional landscape of the arts. Surprisingly, the emphasis on critical writing and research has also led to a significant improvement in my own writing skills, a transferable benefit I hadn't foreseen.

Currently, the Looking In module is proving particularly insightful. It encourages a deep dive into personal identity, motivations, and the underlying reasons behind our creative inclinations. The reflective journal component of this module has become a crucial space for this introspection. For my current project within Looking In, I've been documenting my reflections on lambing time on a local farm. This process isn't just about observing; it's about exploring my own emotional and visual responses to this intense period of rural life, seeking to understand why these scenes and rhythms resonate so deeply with me and how they inform my emerging photographic interests.

In a separate, earlier module, I undertook a research project investigating the contemporary resurgence of analogue cameras. This theoretical exploration, delving into the reasons behind this trend – the tactile experience, the slower pace, the aesthetic qualities – rather than practical experimentation, offered a fascinating lens through which to view current photographic practices. This project, while distinct from the introspective focus of Looking In, has nonetheless contributed to my evolving intellectual framework, prompting me to consider the enduring appeal of certain photographic approaches and their connection to contemporary visual culture. Both the personal reflections in my journal and the analytical research into analogue trends are subtly shaping my growing interest in the representation of rural life within photography.

For those considering MA Photography (Online) at AUB, my advice at this mid-point would be to fully embrace the theoretical and research-driven nature of the course. Be prepared to delve into critical readings, engage in thoughtful discussions, and use the reflective journal as a genuine tool for self-discovery and intellectual exploration. The online format offers considerable flexibility, but it requires self-discipline and proactive engagement with the learning materials and the online community. Don't hesitate to connect with tutors and fellow students; the virtual interactions can be surprisingly enriching and provide valuable perspectives on your research and ideas.

My journey on this MA may have begun with practical considerations, but it has evolved into a deeply engaging intellectual and creative exploration. I am gaining a profound understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of photography and developing a clearer sense of my own photographic interests and potential future direction, particularly in exploring the nuances of rural documentary themes through a contemporary lens. The MA Photography (Online) course at AUB offers a unique and valuable postgraduate experience for those seeking a flexible yet rigorous academic engagement with the field.
