Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is celebrating a major research milestone as Dr Paul Taberham, Associate Professor for BA (Hons) Animation Production, releases two new major book publications this autumn.
Paul, a Fellow of the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image, has co-edited The Routledge Companion to Animation Studies alongside Dr Nichola Dobson, published by Routledge.
Bringing together 46 original contributions from international scholars, the comprehensive volume maps key debates, histories, and practices across the field.
The collection explores cutting-edge themes shaping modern animation, including artificial intelligence, game engines, environmentalism, medium specificity, and global animation cultures.
Alongside the major edited anthology, Dr Taberham’s monograph Poetics of Animation: Medium, Context, and Aesthetics has been published by Berghahn Books.
Drawing on cognitive media theory, narratology, and aesthetics, the book offers a deep dive into how animation communicates meaning and engages audiences through form, medium and context.

"Animation is such a dynamic, fast-evolving discipline, and these volumes represent years of collaboration with brilliant international scholars and deep exploration into how animated media moves and connects with audiences. I hope both books serve as valuable resources for researchers, fans, and especially our students here at AUB.”
Both titles will be available through their respective publishers, with copies arriving in AUB’s Library.
