Nicholas Rawling, an alumnus from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), is exhibiting his pioneering work as a paper puppeteer at Wimborne’s Museum of East Dorset.
Nic studied Graphic Design at AUB, or the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, as it was called when he attended. Today, he's the Artistic Director of Dorset-based The Paper Cinema, a highly original theatre company known for creating a unique blend of live animation, puppetry and music, which has been delighting audiences all over the world.
Titled The Art of Nicholas Rawling, the exhibition will include artwork from The Paper Cinema’s productions of Macbeth, ghost stories and much more, all of which showcase The Paper Cinema’s unique style of reimagining classic literature through paper puppetry.
Founded in 2004, The Paper Cinema uses hand-drawn illustrations and live video to create stunning cinematic performances. As fascinating and imaginative storytellers, they create extraordinary, magical worlds with vivid pen and ink hand-drawn paper puppets, expertly manipulated live by performers and projected onto a screen, to create the illusion of cinematic storytelling.
Nic’s innovative and much-acclaimed storytelling has been featured at major festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe and London International Mime Festival and has performed all over the world including USA, South America, China, New Zealand, Georgia and all over the UK.
“This exciting exhibition will shine a light on a truly unique theatrical company that we’re lucky enough to have based in Dorset," Rob Gray, Collections Manager at the Museum of East Dorset. "It will show the depth and ingenuity of a contemporary Wimborne artist.”
The Art of Nicholas Rawling will run until 31 January 2025 and can be enjoyed as part of normal Museum of East Dorset admission prices.
