Bring your imagination to life through animation!
Are you passionate about creating animated worlds and want to expand your skills in producing short, animated films? This two-week intensive summer course at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is designed for aspiring animators aged 15–18 who want to explore the exciting world of animation and production design while developing their creative and technical skills.

Age
All students must be aged between 15–18 years at the time of attending the course.
Experience or qualifications required
There are no formal academic entry requirements or qualifications needed to study this course. We only ask that you come with a passion for creativity and plenty of enthusiasm to develop your knowledge and skills!
English language
This course will be taught in English. We don't require you hold an English language qualification; however, we recommend you have an intermediate level of English to benefit fully from your experience and be able to communicate with your tutors and fellow students.

- Plenty of warm clothes (it's the UK and although it’s the summer, it can still get cold) – there will be outdoor activities throughout

About this course
Bring your imagination to life through animation! During this two-week intensive summer course, you’ll explore the creative world of animation and production design, developing your skills in drawing, storytelling, storyboarding, character and visual development, and animation.
Through a dynamic programme of workshops, seminars and hands-on studio sessions, you’ll discover the 12 core principles of animation and put them into practice through a range of creative 2D animation exercises. You’ll experiment with both traditional and contemporary approaches, discovering how movement, timing, character and storytelling combine to create compelling animation.
From your first idea through to your finished film, you’ll develop your skills in drawing, observation, visual development, cinematic storytelling, storyboarding, scriptwriting and idea pitching. You’ll experiment with hand-drawn animation, cut-out animation and stop motion, developing your own visual style as you work towards creating an original animated short film.
You’ll also have the opportunity to work with industry-standard equipment and facilities in AUB’s dedicated animation studios, including professional armatures and light boxes. With expert guidance from industry-experienced tutors, you’ll explore editing and digital post-production techniques using the latest creative software, bringing your animation to life, and developing a finished showreel to showcase your work and add to your portfolio.
Based in AUB’s vibrant creative environment, you’ll have access to a wide range of specialist resource areas and industry-standard facilities, giving you the chance to experience what it’s like to work and learn in a leading creative arts university. Combining hands-on making with creative development and digital post-production, this immersive programme will help you build confidence, expand your skills and discover where your ideas can take you.
By the end of the course, you’ll have created your own animated work and developed a finished showreel to showcase your creativity, skills and ideas – a perfect addition to your personal portfolio.

This course aims to:
- Develop your drawing, observational skills and aesthetic awareness in relation to animation design and production
- Enhance your animation skills through practical exercises, exploring contemporary techniques and traditional processes
- Provide teaching guidance and resources to enable students to devise and create their own short, animated film as a team
- Develop your knowledge and understanding of professional animation practice with access to industry standard equipment
- Provide opportunities for self-evaluation and critique to enhance your confidence and reflective skills when considering your work and that of your peers
Will I be assessed?
You'll be continually assessed in a variety of ways including practical tasks, observations, assignments, presentations and portfolio work.
Work produced during the course will be collated into a portfolio and/or digital journal for students to add to their portfolio or for future development.
Your course tutor(s) will offer guidance and support you with your creative applications, as well as feedback on your work and offer advice for your future creative studies.
All students with 100% course attendance will be issued with an official AUB Summer Course Certificate detailing course content and study hours.
