International Printmaking Programme – Exploring Process and Place (18+ years)

Overview

In response to popular demand, this exciting new 2-week international summer programme is designed specifically for adult students who wish to discover the rich and diverse world of printmaking, where you'll be introduced to a wide variety of traditional and experimental printmaking techniques including screen printing, intaglio, relief, and cyanotype printing.

Monday 3 August – Friday 14 August 2026 (including Saturday)

  • Weekdays (Monday – Friday), 09.00-17.00
  • Saturday 8 August, 10.00-16.00

Accommodation

Sunday 2 August, from 14.00 – Saturday 15 August, up till 10.00

Age

Suitable for aspiring artists and printmakers aged 18 years and over (minimum).  

Experience or qualifications required 

There are no formal academic entry requirements or qualifications needed to study this course. We only ask that you come with a passion for the creative printmaking and plenty of enthusiasm!

English language 

This course will be taught in English. We don't require you hold an English language qualification; however, we recommend you have an intermediate level of English to benefit fully from your experience and be able to communicate with your tutors and fellow students.

About this course

This fully immersive summer programme is ideal for complete beginners, passionate creatives, and those who possess previous experience and wish to fully engage themselves in the art of imaginative printmaking. You will study, practise, and create in Arts University Bournemouth (AUB)'s specialist Printmaking studio, where you will explore the history, tools, methods and specialist techniques in which to produce a diverse portfolio of personal work.

Taught by Donna Peters who is a world-renowned printmaker, illustrator, fine artist, and university tutor at AUB, you'll be guided through this highly immersive and practical course, where you'll be introduced into the creative design processes and specialist methods to generate and create an inspired and unique collection of personal work.

To support international students, or those who'll travel considerable distance to attend, we offer a residential option which includes full board catering package.

  • Comprehensive introduction into the history of printmaking
  • Full access to AUB’s specialist Printmaking workshop
  • Detailed exploration of materials, methods, and specialist techniques
  • A total of 75 taught hours over a 2-week period of hands-on experience to practice and hone skills
  • Study excursion, including a visit to professional printmaking studio, historical tour, and Wimborne Chain library
  • Saturday study excursion, including sketching session on-location; capturing inspiration from natural surroundings and historical architecture
  • Transforming sketches and developing imagery into prints using techniques learned
  • Building a personal portfolio of work rooted in ‘process and place’
  • Continual guidance from an experienced practicing designer and tutor

This course aims to:

  • Advance your confidence in skills and abilities
  • Provide every opportunity to use personal creative flair, experiment with new techniques and refine them under the guidance of the tutor
  • Equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to design and develop imagery – at an advanced level
  • Learn to navigate the design process, work with precision, and optimise materials, culminating in several projects that showcase individual design, creativity, and flair
  • Provide the foundations to continue creating for many years beyond this course

Course outcomes and assessment

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of a wide variety of printmaking processes and techniques
  • Be able to work safely, effectively, and efficiently with professional equipment and tools, applying your new skills to a range of materials 
  • Be able to demonstrate significance advancement in printing processes and have the confidence to make your ideas as physical print
  • Possess a good knowledge of colour theory and how an imagery develops with various colours
  • Have increased confidence in your own skills and feel inspired
  • Have boosted creativity and imagination
  • Build the foundations to continue creating beyond this course
  • Assessment will be continuous throughout the course - you may even feel confident enough to become a successful independent printmaker 
  • Group share of work produced at the end of each class with the intention to support, inspire and encourage each other’s learning.
  • On completion of the programme, students will receive an official AUB Academy Certificate of Attendance
