Overview

Unlock your creative future in Fashion! Are you passionate about fashion, textiles, or costume design? Do you dream of one day creating your own clothing line, costume for film and theatre, or innovative textile art? This immersive 2-week summer course designed specifically for students aged 15–18 is the perfect course that offers the first step toward turning those dreams into reality.

During this course students will take part in pre-application reviews where they will receive feedback on their portfolios and could even be offered a place at AUB!

What you need to know

Teaching

Monday 3 August – Friday 14 August 2026 (including Saturday)

  • Weekdays (Monday – Friday), 09.00-17.00
  • Saturday 8 August, 10.00-16.00

Accommodation

Sunday 2 August, from 14.00 – Saturday 15 August, up till 10.00

Age

All students must be aged between 15-17 years at the time of attending the course. 

Experience or qualifications required

There are no formal academic entry requirements or qualifications needed to study this course. We only ask that you come with a passion for animation and plenty of enthusiasm! 

English language

This course will be taught in English. We don't require you hold an English language qualification; however, we recommend you have an intermediate level of English to benefit fully from your experience and be able to communicate with your tutors and fellow students.

  • A camera or mobile phone to record evidence of personal work
  • Suitable clothing for creative activities
  • Notebook and pens/pencils to take notes
  • Plenty of warm clothes – it's the UK and although it’s the summer, it can still get cold! – there will be outdoor activities throughout
  • We advise bringing any work you wish to include in your portfolio for review
  • You'll receive a welcome pack containing more detail of what to bring if you're a residential student

About this course

Join us in a vibrant, hands-on learning environment where industry-standard techniques meet your creative ideas. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, this course will provide you with professional experience, artistic confidence, and a standout portfolio – essential for your next educational step towards success. It also provides a fantastic opportunity to find your path into the right undergraduate course for you under the fashion and textiles umbrella.

Guided by expert tutors, you'll explore everything from sketching and fabric manipulation to pattern making and sample creation. You'll also learn how designers plan collections, select textiles, and prepare their work for presentations and portfolios. Plus, you'll get exclusive insights into the fashion industry, inspiring you to develop your own style and future plans.

By the end of the course, you'll have created a stunning mini collection – perfect for your portfolio, social media, or applying to further study or fashion opportunities.

Participants will engage in creative activities that span from initial concept development, mood boards, and fashion sketching, to fabric selection and sample making. The course emphasises both technical skills and creative expression, preparing students for further study or career pathways in fashion and costume design. Collaborative projects, industry insights, and portfolio development are integral to the experience, enabling students to showcase their ideas and craftsmanship.

The course culminates in a student-led fashion showcase, celebrating their design journey and creative outputs.

  • Introduction to fashion history, trend forecasting, and mood boarding
  • Fundamental sketching and illustration techniques for fashion and costume design
  • Fabric sourcing, textile manipulation, and sample making (dyeing, printing, embellishing)
  • Developing a concept for a mini collection or costume design
  • Intro to pattern cutting and basic construction (using templates and simple assembly techniques)
  • Refining designs through technical flats and detailed drawings
  • Experimenting with garment prototypes or costume samples
  • Creative textiles: surface decoration, fabric layering, and innovative materials
  • Styling, presentation, and preparing designs for display
  • Designing and producing a mini collection or costume set for display or performance
  • Showcasing student work in a mini exhibition or presentation

This course aims to:

  • Enhance practical skills in fashion illustration, pattern cutting, and textile art
  • Develop confidence in design, production, and styling original clothing or costumes
  • Enable you to start a professional-quality mini collection or costume portfolio
  • Provide insight into industry trends, career paths, and how to succeed in fashion
  • Develop your creative problem-solving skills and teamwork experience
  • Provide opportunities for self-evaluation and critique to enhance your confidence and reflective skills when considering yours and others work
  • Provide the opportunity to showcase your work in a final exhibition and presentation that shines in your portfolio and/or social channels

Will I be assessed?

You'll be continually assessed in a variety of ways including practical tasks, observations, assignments, presentations, and portfolio work.

Work produced during the course will be collated into a portfolio and/or digital journal for students to add to their portfolio or for future development.

Your course tutor will offer guidance and support you with your creative applications, as well as feedback on your work and offer advice for your future creative studies.

All students with 100% course attendance will be issued with an official AUB Summer Course Certificate detailing course contents and study hours.
