Course information

Over five Saturdays, you'll develop essential skills to capture authentic moments and craft compelling narratives through compelling images.

Designed for beginners and open to those with basic camera control knowledge, this course encourages you to explore the art of storytelling in the real world, whether documenting everyday life, local events, or social issues.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to approach a subject, develop your personal style and communicate ideas visually. You’ll participate in practical outdoor shoots, capturing diverse environments and human stories, and then use editing and sequencing techniques to create impactful photo essays. Guided by an experienced tutor, you’ll experiment with composition, lighting and perspective, gaining confidence in telling stories that resonate.

In addition to technical skills, particular emphasis will be placed on honing your observational eye, developing a sensitivity to emotion and context, and fostering an understanding of how images can influence and inform an audience. The course also explores ethical considerations in photojournalism, including your rights to shoot in public spaces, respecting privacy, and accurately representing subjects.

By the end of the course, you'll have produced a portfolio of visual stories that demonstrate your growing ability to capture authentic moments and communicate messages powerfully through the medium of photography.
