I am passionate about costume construction and during my time at university, I have been able to continuously challenge myself by creating historical garments ranging from the 16th to the 18th century.
My final major project at AUB has allowed me to explore one of my main interests: pantomime. As part of this project, I constructed a Cinderella rags dress as a personal project. This involved developing my pattern cutting and sewing skills, as well as experimenting with fabric dyes and costume breakdown techniques to create a convincingly worn appearance. Alongside this, I deconstructed and reconstructed a Fairy Godmother costume which was an invaluable experience in understanding what is required to create a highly decorative yet durable performance garment.
I took inspiration from 18th century fashion, blending historical elements with a theatrical pantomime twist that is required to suit the genre’s bold style. I worked closely with my designer, Wayne Martin, and carried out detailed research using a museum, archive and books to inform my approach. This project gave me the opportunity to bring together everything I’ve learnt at university and apply those skills to two finished garments that reflect my aspiration to become a costume maker in the industry.
Plans after degree
I plan to pursue a career in costume making and hope to be a part of the pantomime season each year. Currently, I would like to gain as much experience as possible and find a job role that will allow me to refine and develop the skills I have gained at AUB.
