During my third year of university, I decided to do a personal project. This project involved recreating a robe à la française inspired by a 1759 portrait of Madame de Pompadour painted by François Boucher. My goal was to capture the elegance, silhouette, and decorative details of 18th century French fashion as accurately as possible. 

To create the correct silhouette, I made all of the historical undergarments that would have been worn beneath the gown, including bloomers, a chemise, a corset, pocket hoops, a petticoat, and an underskirt. Each layer was essential in building the structured bodice and wide skirt that defined fashionable dress during this period. The outer gown, made from silk taffeta, was then constructed to sit over these layers and recreate the proportions seen in Boucher’s portrait. I paid particular attention to the decorative features of the dress. The dress was embellished with gathered strips of fabric arranged in flowing, wave-like patterns, along with organza bows, lace flounces on the sleeves and a pink rose detail. To complete the ensemble, I also made a silk ruffle necklace as an accessory. 

Although I remained closely faithful to the original painting, I chose to change the colour scheme. Instead of replicating the original colours, I created the gown in a blue silk. This allowed me to add a personal touch while still preserving the overall style, structure and decorative qualities of the historical design. The finished garment reflects a balance between historical accuracy and creative interpretation.

After graduation, I want to work in film or theatre making costumes, specifically historical costumes.
