A new short film by artist Alex Culshaw, a former BA (Hons) Fine Art lecturer at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), premieres at MEZZANINE in London from as part of an exhibition by the same name.
Studio Dialogues was shot on location at AUB in the Drawing Studio, designed by renowned architect and AUB alumnus Professor Sir Peter Cook RA.
Navigating the subtle tensions of shared space, ambition and power dynamics between two artists in a sterile, cavernous studio, the production of the film heavily involved emerging AUB talent.
Kathryn Addis and Will Sipling, who both graduated from the BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2024, served as sound recording and production assistants.
Accompanying the film in the exhibition is a limited-edition publication, Plinth and Kettle, edited by Alex and featuring contributions from 16 artists including Rachel McRae, a Fine Art lecturer at AUB. Exploring the realities of the working studio, the publication is a collection of texts and images from various artists who reflect on their own creative ecosystems, contrasting the pristine set of the film with the functional reality of contemporary studio life.
Rachel comments, “This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the impact of our Fine Art and wider creative courses. It highlights the practical skills our graduates carry into the industry and the ongoing professional dialogue maintained by our academic staff.”
