Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Pamela Howard OBE, a renowned theatre designer, director, scenographer, author, and cherished Visiting Professor and Emerita Professor of AUB.

A pioneer in scenography whose career spanned decades and continents, Pamela was an ardent champion of AUB and its creative community. Her groundbreaking work redefined the way theatre makers understand performance space, coining and shaping the concept of Scenography as a "seamless synthesis of space, text, research, art, actors, directors, and spectators".

Her seminal book What Is Scenography? has been translated into seven languages and remains the definitive international text on the discipline.

Throughout her illustrious career, Pamela was driven by a deep conviction to elevate human stories, particularly those of the dispossessed, migrants, and refugees. Working "under the sign of the broken pencil" in her seaside studio, drawing remained at the absolute heart of her practice, serving as an anchor for her joyfully industrious creative spirit.

Her connection with AUB ran deep, inspiring generations of students, academics, and practitioners across costume, design, and performance. In 2016, AUB celebrated her practice by hosting Drawing Theatre: Pamela Howard, the inaugural exhibition in AUB’s iconic Drawing Studio.

The event brought together leading international figures from scenography and costume, generating plaudits that continue to resonate across the industry today. To accompany the installation, a dedicated Text + Work book was produced and edited, subsequently shortlisted for the prestigious Prague Quadrennial (PQ19) Best Publication Award.

Reflecting on her immense contribution to AUB and the wider theatrical world, colleagues and leadership have shared their tributes.

Dr Rebecca Pride, MA Historical Costume Course Leader and Associate Professor in Costume Production Practice, says, “Professor Pamela Howard OBE was a great champion of Arts University Bournemouth and a passionate advocate for the contribution our costume and scenography courses make to the theatre, film, and television industries.

“Her creativity, generosity, and innovative approach to teaching inspired generations of students and colleagues alike. She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of working and learning with her.”

Professor Lisa Mann, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of AUB, adds, “Pamela Howard was a true visionary whose artistic spirit and dedication to scenography transformed theatre design across the globe. Her passion for storytelling, her commitment to championing marginalised voices, and her unwavering generosity as an educator left an indelible mark on Arts University Bournemouth. Pamela was a dear friend to AUB, and her extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire our students, staff, and the wider creative community for years to come.”

AUB extends its heartfelt condolences to Pamela’s family, friends, and many colleagues across the global arts community.
