An Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) graduate film has come away with an award at this year’s Cinemagic On the Pulse Festival.
Eyes, Front, a military drama produced by 2024 BA (Hons) Film Production graduates, was named the winner in the Drama or Comedy category at the start of April.
“It felt really validating to win,” says Alex Wheeler, who wrote and directed the film. “As someone fresh of out film school, you’re flung into a world of already-established filmmakers, so it felt nice just to be recognised with the nomination alone.”
The film follows British Army recruit Lewis Bailey as he struggles to fit in with his peers. When Lewis witnesses a female friend being assaulted, he battles with his conscience as he must choose whether to act in her defence or indulge in his own ambition.
Alex explains that Eyes, Front took inspiration, not only from her parents, who served in the British Army, but also, “decades of testimonies of abuse from current and former members of the forces.”
“The story was built on nothing but truth,” she says, “shedding light on the enablement of certain persisting attitudes within these institutions.
“It feels great to have my work recognised straight out of school. However, I recognise that I have a very long way to go as well, this barely feels like the start – which is exciting!
“Although I directed in my final year at AUB, I must give a huge thankyou to cinematography lecturer György Lazslo for the unwavering commitment and passion for the subject, that alone would (and has) inspired students at AUB.
“The training at AUB has instilled me with confidence without a doubt, I think the endless opportunities for collaboration at the school are next-to-none.”
Having graduated from BA (Hons) Film Production in 2024, and moved from Ireland to London, Alex currently works as a freelance editor and director. She writes in her free time, but also admits that she’s considering a Master’s in directing.
Eyes, Front is not the first AUB grad film to achieve success at the On the Pulse Festival. Last year, Le Château des Chats, directed by BA (Hons) Animation Production graduate Ottilie Collingridge, took away the 8+ Jury Prize.
An annual film festival, On the Pulse exhibits a contemporary programme of the very best international short films for young audiences, as well as showcasing short films made by local young filmmakers. It includes a competitive strand for Irish filmmakers under the age of 30.
