Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) recently fulfilled a resident’s dream to revisit their love for art.

Tom Marshall, Head of Estates and Campus Services at AUB, was delighted to welcome Julia, a former teacher at both Birmingham University and the Open University who studied History of Art, to our campus.

Julia suffers from dementia and lives at Upton Bay care home in Hamworthy, who provided her the opportunity to rediscover her long-term passion by visiting AUB Campus.

Tom showed Julia around the campus including a visit to the Columbian Print and Albion Press Rooms, featuring two print machines that have been in use since 1883 and still used by students today. Her visit continued on to North Light Studios where she was introduced to BA (Hons) Fine Art course leader Dr Richard Waring, who showed her around the studio where she chatted to third-year students working on their final projects.

Karen, Activity Lead at Upton Bay care home, comments, “It was a wonderful achievement for Julia to demonstrate and talk about her profession when combatting such a difficult illness. And a pleasure to give Julia such an inspiring and fulfilling wish organising something that meant so much to her. It’s so rewarding to watch a dementia resident engage so well with younger, like-minded students”.

Julia’s husband adds, “It was wonderful to see Julia becoming so animated again, which we haven’t seen for years.”

Something to think about
