A new photography exhibition, In Motion, is opening at the Hatch Gallery in Christchurch, bringing together a series of images recording everyday settings with objects and people in motion by Christchurch-based photographer, David Perkins.

Recent retiree David says of the series, “The photographs are taken in several different locations and explore the movement of people and objects, most notably by enhancing motion. I explore light, colour, shape, pattern and form, alongside the extremes of expansive images and fine detail.”

Originally trained as a structural engineer, David became involved in business development and marketing during his career, helping develop his attention to detail, which in turn informed his image-making.

“I’ve been taking photos for a long time, and when I retired, I had the time to go on a photography course at Arts University Bournemouth. I wanted to improve my knowledge of the technicalities of photography and finesse my hobby into something more than that.

“The 10-week course enhanced my technical understanding and, most importantly, led me into a more creative approach to producing photographic images. My first exhibition – last month - was also in Christchurch and organised along with the other people from the course.

“This is my first solo exhibition, and I’m delighted to say that I’ve just had a submission accepted for another show in Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch, London. I’m delighted, less than a year since I went on the photography course, and here I am, involved in my third exhibition already!”

David’s In Motion exhibition runs from 9–14 August at Hatch Gallery, 7a Church Street, Christchurch. The show is open Monday – Saturday 11.00–16.00, with a private view on Saturday 9 August from 12.00–16.00.

David’s contribution to the Abstract Harmony show at the Espacio Gallery in Shoreditch runs from 19–24 August.
