Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) is celebrating global acclaim after stop-motion animator and alumna Momo Hiramatsu secured a prestigious Judges’ Special Award at the Kochi Anime Creator Awards in Japan.
Momo, a graduate of AUB’s MA Animation Production course, received the accolade for her celebrated short film, Haro (2025). The competition, held during the high-profile Kochi Ani-Kuri Fes, attracted over 310 elite entries from leading art institutions and independent creators worldwide.
“Haro and I are truly delighted to receive this great award,” says Momo. “I know that I am only at the beginning of my journey as an animation artist, but I feel that this award encourages me to keep moving forward.
"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me, including AUB. They provided a wonderful environment for learning animation and so much more.”
Industry judges, including executives from major publishing house Shueisha and top-tier directors, praised the exceptionally high technical and storytelling standards of this year’s cohort.
Amidst fierce competition from major Japanese animation powerhouses like Tokyo University of the Arts and Tama Art University, Momo’s unique stop motion aesthetic stood out as a notable international recipient, reinforcing AUB's position as a world-class hub for postgraduate talent.
For Momo, recognition at this scale provides invaluable validation from the epicentre of the global animation industry. Haro has already established a strong presence closer to home, having been featured in distinct AUB exhibitions and collaborative, interdisciplinary university projects.
“Awards like the Kochi Anime Creator Award are critical for our postgraduate community and the wider university ecosystem,” says Professor Paul Ward, Course Leader for MA Animation Production at AUB.
“Momo’s success with Haro shows how our MA Animation Production programme empowers creators to build narratives that transcend borders. These accolades validate our technical rigour against exacting international standards and capture the attention of global studio leaders.
“Haro also features the input of other students from AUB, who worked under Momo’s direction – a team that included students from MA Animation Production, BA (Hons) Animation Production, BA (Hons) Acting and MA Graphic Design.
“The international triumph of Haro underscores AUB's commitment to nurturing sustainable, industry-ready talent capable of making a profound cultural impact worldwide.”
