A creative, multi-layered research project was hosted by the Innovation Studio at Arts University Bournemouth on Friday 19 September, celebrating women’s journeys to healthy, alcohol-free lifestyles and delivering an afternoon of art and storytelling.
‘Nourish the New You’ supports women in recovery from disordered alcohol use through nutrition education and creative expression.
As well as a film by Jelena Ilic, attendees also saw an art installation created in collaboration with women from With You, a charity that offers support to people who have challenges with drugs, alcohol or mental health, and Soberistas, a worldwide community of people all helping each other to overcome disordered alcohol use.
The initiative, led by Pauline Ferrick-Squibb from AUB and Dr. Chloe Casey from Bournemouth University, was delivered in partnership with The Friendly Food Club and funded by Wessex Health Partners, AUB and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.
Dr. Chloe Casey welcomed attendees at the event and comments: “Nourish the New You has been one of the most rewarding projects. Its aim was to raise awareness of the role nutrition plays in recovery and to explore how we can better support people to eat well and nourish themselves during that journey.”
Pauline Ferrick-Squibb, a Senior Lecturer of BA (Hons) Commercial Photography and MA Photography at AUB, adds: “This project was initiated by Dr. Chloe Casey after seeing This is Menopause UK, which demonstrated how creative, participatory research can turn lived experiences into powerful art that engages both the public and professionals, driving meaningful change.
“We are seeking gallery and public space venues to showcase the Nourish the New You film and tablecloth to advance this vital conversation and advocate for policy updates that recognise the role of good nutrition in recovery.”
The tablecloth will be displayed at the Royal College of Psychiatrists on 1 October for the Alcohol Care Team Innovation and Optimisation annual event.
