Do I need to do an English test?

If you are from a country where English is not the official language, we will need to assess your English language ability as part of your application to study at AUB.

Generally speaking, the way that we assess your English language level depends on whether or not you require a visa to study in the UK and the level of course for which you are applying.

If you are not sure whether you require a visa to study in the UK, click here to find out.

Please select the category that you fit into best from the list below to find out what sort of language assessment you need to provide. If you don’t fit into any of the categories below, or if you’re not sure, send us an email telling us about your situation and we’ll let you know exactly which method of language assessment you need to undertake.

I am from a majority English speaking country

If you’re from one of the majority English speaking countries listed below, we will simply use your high school qualification to assess your English and you will not be required to undertake any further tests.

  • Norwegian Vitnemål with English graded at 4 or higher
  • Icelandic Studentsprof with 7 in English when taken as a compulsory language
  • Indian 12th Standard from a recognised exam board with an English grade at 70% or above (75% for MA students)
  • USA High School Diploma with a B in English

I do need a visa to study in the UK and I’m applying for a Pre-degree (Foundation) course or a Pre-sessional English course

You will need to take an IELTS for UKVI test at an approved test centre.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU BOOK AN IELTS FOR UKVI TEST – this is not the same as an IELTS for Academic purposes or General test and it is vital that you do the right test. A list of approved test centres is here.

If you have any doubt that you’re booking the right test, email us to check.

To find out which scores you’ll need for the course that you’re planning to do, click here.

In case you’re wondering why the requirements for you are different to the requirements for people doing BA, MA or PhD courses, it’s because the UK government doesn’t give universities any choice about how they assess English language ability for courses which are below degree level. If you have any questions about this, email us.
