Course information

Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refresh your skills, this course will guide you through the essentials of capturing stunning natural scenes, from remote wilderness to stimulating vantage points.

Led by an experienced tutor and practising photographer, you'll gain confidence in using your camera to explore light, composition and timing, transforming ordinary environments into extraordinary images.

During this very practical and enlightening course you'll be introduced to the essential techniques to broaden your skills and introduce you to the boundless possibilities and avenues that landscape photography offers the creative artist.

The Landscape Photography course is structured in a way to give you the freedom to choose what you want to shoot based on the creative concepts you’ll be taught. Sessions will include a range of demonstrations, practical tasks, examples, and background theory to help build your knowledge and allow you to continue creating beautiful and captivating images beyond this course. Additionally, your tutor will offer advice on future purchases of photographic equipment.

  • Practical outdoor photo shoots and guided field trips to local scenic locations
  • Instruction on camera controls, exposure, focus and composition
  • Tips on selecting and using filters, tripod techniques and light management
  • Opportunities to review your work with constructive feedback
  • Support and guidance during real-world shooting conditions
  • Additional mid-session assignments – to practise skills

At the end of the course:

  • Be confident in landscape photography techniques through hands-on practice
  • Understand how to compose compelling images of natural scenery
  • Understand the use of light, weather, and seasonal changes to enhance photographs
  • Foster a creative approach and develop your own photographic style
  • Be able to prepare you with skills to confidently capture landscapes in various environments, using natural and available light
  • Have developed technical skills in camera use and outdoor shooting techniques
  • Have produced a portfolio of landscape images capturing varied environments and moods
  • Gain confidence in working with natural light and weather conditions

Will I be assessed?

No, there's no formal assessment. As the course progresses your tutor will measure your overall performance and offer essential guidance and feedback, so you know how you're getting on.

What you need to know

Summer term 2027

Saturday 10 and 24 April; 8 and 22 May; 5 June 2027 (5 alternating Saturdays, 09.00–16.00)

Age

Suitable for adults aged 18+.

Level

This is an introductory course and no prior experience is required. All you need is a willingness to learn, explore and develop your skills in a supportive environment.

Experience or qualifications required

Ideally, you'll possess a basic understanding of camera control or have previously conducted an introductory photography course with AUB Academy.

You should have your own digital camera, enthusiasm, and creative energy. Plus, the ability to travel independently to venues in the local conurbation.

Please note: some walking on uneven terrain will be necessary during course sessions.

Any additional costs

If you don't already own a camera, you'll need one for this course, so this may be an additional cost for you. You'll also need to travel independently to shoot locations where parking fees may apply.

Any additional materials and resources not listed below will be provided by AUB.

  • A notebook and pen
  • Sturdy outdoor clothing and comfortable footwear
  • Camera and any additional photographic equipment such as extra lenses, tripod or filters
