Course information
Whether your goal is to create garments for your own wardrobe, prepare for a fashion degree, or begin building industry-level skills for a future career in fashion, this course provides the perfect foundation. You’ll gain hands-on experience with sewing techniques, pattern cutting and garment construction in a supportive, creative environment.
Based in Arts University Bournemouth’s specialist Fashion Studios, you’ll work with a range of industry-standard sewing machinery, presses and equipment, learning the processes and techniques used in professional fashion studios. This course is designed to build confidence step by step, helping you understand not just how garments are made, but why they're constructed in certain ways.
Led by AUB fashion specialists Gillian Kelly and Alice Kiernander, you’ll take part in tutor-led demonstrations, discussions and practical workshops. You’ll learn how to pattern cut and construct your own bodice block with sleeves to your own measurements, gaining a solid grounding in garment fit and construction
A unique highlight of this course is the opportunity to use AUB’s industry-standard Size Stream body scanner. You’ll receive precise measurements of your body, which will be used to create a bespoke bodice block tailored specifically to you. This personalised approach allows you to experience how professional designers achieve accurate fit.
Using your bespoke block, you'll understand how to manipulate darts and take part in various pattern cutting demonstrations. You’ll be drafting and fitting to your bodice block which will be made with calico – you'll understand how to manipulate the block with expert tuition.
