Material Friction

I am a graphic designer, printmaker and design educator whose practice investigates the relationship between digital systems and analogue, tactile craft. As a creative media and art tutor, my work examines how modern designers navigate emerging technologies alongside physical making.

Material Friction explores the intersection of generative artificial intelligence and traditional printmaking techniques. The process begins with an AI-generated digital baseline, representing algorithmic precision. This foundation is then integrated with physical Gelli plate printing processes, introducing organic analogue characteristics such as overprinting and mis-registration. To translate these physical CMYK print flaws into the final digital symbol, the lines were hand-traced to physically capture the organic variations of a human line, rather than relying on a digitally generated stroke. This dialogue is visually epitomised by two intersecting elements: a mathematically precise circle representing digital uniformity, and an unpredictable, hand-traced circle representing human tactile craft.

By scanning these physical iterations back into the digital space, the project maps a cohesive, hybrid design system. This interconnected framework features a diagnostic flowchart roadmap, a systematic verification matrix, and precise technical specifications detailing how digital outputs and physical textures can coexist seamlessly.

A core element of this project is the creation of an open-source trust symbol, designed to be freely shared, implemented and adapted by the wider creative community. Through Material Friction, my goal is to encourage designers to view emerging digital tools, open-source frameworks and analogue materials not as opposing forces, but as complementary partners that drive contemporary graphic design forward.

Plans after degree

Following the completion of my MA Graphic Design (Online), my goal is to explore a diverse, multidisciplinary path that bridges advanced practice and creative strategy. Because this body of research intersects emerging technology and tactile systems, I am eager to keep my opportunities open across several distinct areas rather than committing to a single trajectory.

I am actively looking into design consultancy and freelance opportunities where I can advise brands and creative agencies on how to integrate hybrid workflows, digital precision and human authenticity. In tandem with industry practice, I remain highly interested in transitioning into Higher Education lecturing, bringing my research and pedagogical experience to degree-level students. Ultimately, I view this next chapter as a space to cultivate a flexible, creative modern practice that spans independent design, consultancy and academic mentorship.
